The Yamate No. 234 Building is a historic Western-style residence located in the Yamate district of Naka Ward, Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture. Completed in 1927, this two-story wooden building is characterized by its symmetrical layout, with a central entrance dividing the structure. Originally designed as housing for foreign residents, it now serves as a cultural landmark within Motomachi Park and is open to the public free of charge.
The building holds a significant place in the history of post-Great Kanto Earthquake reconstruction. Following the massive destruction of 1923, many residential areas were rebuilt, and this structure was part of that era's development. After serving as housing for foreign residents and even being used by occupation forces following World War II, it continued to function as an apartment building until around 1980. In 1989, the City of Yokohama acquired the building, and in 1999, it was officially designated as a Yokohama City-certified historical building.
Inside the building, visitors can experience exhibits that illustrate the lifestyle of the early 20th century. The living room and dining area on the left side of the first floor are furnished with period-appropriate furniture, recreating the atmosphere of a home from that era. On the right side of the first floor, you can view a scale model of the building as it appeared during its original construction. The second floor is often utilized as a rental space for exhibitions and events. The architecture features a symmetrical design with a traditional roof structure and cement tiles, preserving the charm of the era.
To fully appreciate the textures of the wooden architecture and the way light enters the building through the lightwell (courtyard), we recommend visiting during the bright daylight hours. While admission is free, please note that the building is open from 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM.
Walking through this historic structure allows you to learn about the architectural styles and daily lives of the foreign residents who once lived here. You can observe how furniture was arranged in the living spaces to understand the spatial culture of the time. The second floor also serves as a dynamic space that hosts various exhibitions and cultural events.
The building is located within the scenic Motomachi Park. The surrounding Yamate area is a wonderful place for a stroll, as you can easily visit other historic landmarks such as the Elisman House and the Berick Hall along Yamate Hon-dori Street. The entire district maintains a beautifully preserved historical landscape.
When visiting, it is recommended to wear comfortable shoes as the building features stairs and uneven surfaces. Since this is a protected historical site, please observe all etiquette and refrain from touching the exhibits or furniture. Please check local signage for any specific rules regarding photography or temporary changes in exhibition content.
