Located at Jisso-ji Temple in Hokuto City, Yamanashi Prefecture, the 'Yatagami Jindai Sakura' is an ancient Edohigan cherry tree estimated to be approximately 2,000 years old. It is recognized as one of the Three Great Cherry Trees of Japan and is designated as a National Natural Monument. Beyond being a mere plant, this tree has been an object of reverence for centuries, symbolizing the preciousness of life. Surrounding the ancient giant, about 30 Yoshino cherry trees bloom in spring, creating a landscape enveloped in a sea of pink blossoms.
The history of this tree is profound. Legend has it that the hero Yamato Takeru no Mikoto planted this tree during his expedition to the eastern provinces. Furthermore, during the Kamakura period, the Buddhist monk Nichiren Shonin visited this site and prayed for the tree's recovery after seeing it in decline. Because of this, it is also known as the 'Myoho Sakura.' It was designated as a National Natural Monument in 1922. Despite surviving numerous natural disasters throughout the centuries, the tree continues to spread its branches powerfully, standing as a testament to resilience.
The primary focus is the awe-inspiring sight of the 2,000-year-old giant. With a height of approximately 10 meters and a trunk circumference of about 12 meters, its massive presence leaves a lasting impression on all who visit. Another extraordinary feature is the 'Space Sakura.' In 2008, seeds from this lineage traveled aboard a space shuttle to experience space before returning to Earth. This 'Space Sakura' represents a rare fusion of science and nature, making it a truly unique botanical phenomenon.
The peak blooming season is typically around April 7th and lasts for about one week. During this time, the view of the ancient Jindai Sakura surrounded by the lighter Yoshino blossoms is truly spectacular. If you are lucky enough to see the blossoms against the backdrop of the snow-capped Southern Alps, the scenery becomes even more breathtaking. The bright daylight hours are ideal for photography, as the colors of the petals appear most vivid.
Visitors can experience the serene atmosphere of a traditional Japanese temple while connecting with the raw vitality of nature. Observing the 'Space Sakura'—grown from seeds that traveled to space—is a rare opportunity found nowhere else. Jisso-ji Temple is located in Takawa, Hokuto City, an area surrounded by rich natural beauty, making it perfect for driving and walking tours. Please note that roads can become quite crowded during the peak cherry blossom season, so it is important to check your route in advance. When using a car navigation system, please input 'Jisso-ji' instead of 'Jindai Sakura' to ensure you reach the correct destination accurately.
