Yamashita Park is a vast waterfront park located in Naka-ku, Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture, facing the beautiful Port of Yokohama. Stretching approximately 750 meters along the coastline with a width of about 100 meters, the park covers an area of roughly 7.4 hectares. It is characterized by its breathtaking ocean vistas, seasonal rose gardens, and various historical monuments. The park stands as a symbol of Yokohama, born from the reconstruction efforts following the Great Kanto Earthquake.
The park's origins date back to the reconstruction efforts after the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923. It was constructed using land reclaimed from the debris of the earthquake and officially opened on March 15, 1930. The project was envisioned by figures such as Toru Narooka, the then Vice President of Yokohama City, as a seaside promenade for the city's urban planning. Although the area underwent a period of US military occupation during and after the war, it was fully returned and redeveloped in 1959. Today, it serves as a culturally rich space dotted with historical remains and monuments.
The park offers numerous spots that connect visitors to history and culture. A major attraction is the "Future Rose Garden," which hosts approximately 2,650 roses of 190 different species. Visitors can also explore various historical monuments, such as the General Ricart Monument, the India Water Tower, the Japan-US Girl Scout Friendship Statue, and the Statue of the Water Guardian. Additionally, the historic ocean liner "Hikawa Maru" is permanently moored at the pier, serving as a striking centerpiece of the harbor landscape. Other landmarks, like the "Girl in Red Shoes" statue, allow visitors to touch upon the diverse historical layers of the area during their stroll.
The character of Yamashita Park changes beautifully with the seasons. The rose garden is particularly stunning in the spring (around April to May), offering a delightful fragrance and vibrant colors. The park is an open, refreshing space year-round; during the day, you can enjoy the contrast between the blue sea and sky, in the evening, witness a breathtaking sunset, and at night, enjoy the sparkling lights of the harbor. Special events like the Belgium Beer Weekend or various illumination displays also create a unique atmosphere.
Visitors can enjoy a peaceful time connecting with nature and history. Common activities include walking along the seaside promenade or relaxing on park benches. For a more elevated experience, "THE WHARF HOUSE Yamashita Park" offers a cafe, restaurant, BBQ facilities, and a shop, allowing you to enjoy meals while gazing at the ocean. Furthermore, the nearby piers offer access to bay cruises and sea buses, making it easy to explore the water from the park's vicinity.
Yamashita Park is located in the heart of Yokohama's most popular tourist district. The historic ship Hikawa Maru is docked right in front of the park, and the Yokohama Marine Tower stands nearby across the street. The park is within walking distance of the famous Yokohama Chinatown, Motomachi, and the Yamate hillside area, making it an ideal base for sightseeing. The continuous promenade also connects the park to the Shin-port area, Minato Mirai 21, and the Red Brick Warehouse, allowing for a seamless exploration of Yokohama's port-town charm.
While the park features well-maintained walkways, it is an open seaside environment, so please dress appropriately for the weather. During the spring rose season, a hat and sunglasses are recommended to protect against the sun. Public restrooms are available within the park. While major facilities like THE WHARF HOUSE may accept credit cards or electronic money, it is wise to carry some cash for smaller nearby shops or buses. Photography of scenery is freely permitted, but please follow specific rules during special events.
