Yamainudake (elevation 997.6m) is a mountain located in Kamikatsu Town, Katsuura District, Tokushima Prefecture. This area is renowned as a premier destination for moss lovers, featuring a unique landscape where the ground and rocks are blanketed in thick layers of water moss and vibrant green moss. The name of the mountain is derived from a legend stating that the rock formations at the summit once resembled the open mouth of a mountain dog. Surrounded by deciduous forests and massive ancient cedar trees, the area feels like a sacred sanctuary where the artistry of nature is visible at every turn.
Near the summit, you will find historical elements such as the Daishido shrine, surrounded by towering cedars, and connections to the Ryuo-san Toko-ji Temple. The area is also dotted with stone Buddhas related to the 'Mini Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage,' suggesting that this has been a place of spiritual devotion and respect for nature since ancient times. It is a region where natural beauty and spiritual culture are deeply intertwined.
The most striking feature is the dense carpet of moss covering the rocks and the ground, creating a lush, velvety texture. After a rainfall, the mossy landscape transforms into a brilliant green carpet. From the summit, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the Shikoku Mountain Range and Mount Tsurugi. Along the hiking trails, you can discover stone Buddhas nestled within the landscape, allowing for a moment of quiet contemplation amidst nature's grand designs.
The scenery changes dramatically with the seasons. In spring and early summer, vibrant fresh greenery dominates the landscape, while autumn brings a stunning display of colorful foliage. The harmony between the autumn leaves and the green moss creates a unique, breathtaking vista. Because some parts of the trail are steep, it is highly recommended to hike during the bright daylight hours for safety and visibility.
Visitors can enjoy hiking and trekking through a pristine natural environment. While the trails are maintained, they include steep sections that require physical engagement. The experience focuses on observing the intricate textures of the moss and the unique placement of the giant boulders. At the foot of the mountain lies the beautiful 'Kashihara Rice Terraces.' As you approach the trailhead, you can enjoy the scenic views of these traditional terraced fields. The entire Kamikatsu area is rich in nature, offering numerous spots perfect for forest bathing and nature observation.
Proper hiking gear is essential. You will need sturdy, high-traction shoes for the trek. Because the paths and the approach to the trailhead can be quite steep, the use of trekking poles is strongly recommended. While there are no fees for using the mountain trails, please carry cash if you plan to visit local facilities nearby. To protect this delicate ecosystem, please stay strictly on the designated paths to avoid damaging the moss and plants. Given the rugged terrain, ensure you are well-prepared for a physical hike.
