Sanjui Warehouse is a historic rice warehouse located in Sakata City, Yamagata Prefecture. Built in 1893 as an annex to the Sakata Rice Exchange, it is now designated as a national historical site, preserving the architectural style of the Meiji era. The site features buildings designed to maintain rice quality, surrounded by 41 majestic zelkova (keyaki) trees. The contrast between the white-walled warehouses and the lush greenery makes this one of the most photogenic locations in the region.
The facility was originally constructed by the Sakai family of the former Shonai Clan. To overcome the soft ground conditions, the construction utilized a sophisticated system of 3.6-meter high embankments and stone walls. This robust structure even helped minimize damage during the massive earthquake of 1894. Historically, this area served as a vital hub for river transport via the Mogami River, embodying the logistics history of the Edo and Meiji periods. In 2021, it was officially designated as a national historical site to preserve its cultural heritage.
The most striking feature is the row of zelkova trees to the west of the warehouses. These trees historically served as a natural windbreak against harsh seasonal winds. The warehouses themselves are built using traditional 'dozo-zukuri' (earthen warehouse) techniques to protect rice from fire and humidity. Visitors can also see exhibits regarding historical transport methods and restored traditional boats, providing a glimpse into the life and logistics of the past. On certain occasions, the area is illuminated at night, offering a completely different, magical atmosphere.
While accessible year-round, the scenery changes beautifully with the seasons. The lush green of the zelkova trees against a clear blue sky in summer provides stunning contrast for photography. If visiting during evening hours, you may experience a mystical atmosphere through light-up events. It is highly recommended to check the schedule in advance if you wish to see the nighttime illuminations.
Visitors can enjoy a peaceful stroll through a landscape that feels like a movie set. The site is famous for being a filming location for works such as the film 'Departures' (Okuribito) and the NHK drama 'Oshin.' Walking through the grounds allows you to immerse yourself in a cinematic, nostalgic atmosphere. Additionally, the exhibits related to traditional river transport offer a deep dive into Japan's historical logistics culture.
