Established in 1979, the Yamaguchi Prefectural Museum of Art is a cultural institution that highlights the unique identity of Yamaguchi Prefecture. Its core mission is to serve as an 'open museum' where the local community can participate in and experience art. The museum plays a vital role as a center for regional cultural creation, hosting exhibitions that delve into local history, such as the medieval Ouchi culture, and showcasing artists closely associated with the prefecture. The building is a sturdy reinforced concrete structure with one basement level and two floors above ground, harmoniously integrated into the surrounding natural environment.
The museum's collection was significantly bolstered by the donation of numerous works from the family of Yasuo Katsuki, a renowned painter known for his 'Siberia Series' which depicts his experiences during his internment in Siberia. This collection forms the heart of the museum. Additionally, the museum holds important art pieces linked to the Choshu Domain, including works by Sesshu and Kano Hogai, as well as post-war artist Kazusa Kobayashi. The institution continues to work toward preserving historical cultural legacies while fostering new artistic expressions.
The museum features multiple exhibition spaces (labeled A through F) for permanent and special exhibitions. A standout feature is the collection of works by artists from Yamaguchi and exhibits related to the medieval Ouchi culture. The architecture itself is a highlight, offering a tranquil atmosphere within a scholarly district. Depending on the exhibition, visitors can enjoy a wide range of genres, from traditional Japanese painting (Nihonga) to contemporary art.
The museum is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM (last entry at 4:30 PM). We recommend visiting during daylight hours to fully appreciate the interplay between the architecture and the surrounding natural scenery. Since special exhibitions change periodically, it is highly recommended to check the official schedule before your visit. The changing seasons provide a beautiful backdrop that enhances the viewing experience of the artworks.

The surrounding area is a cultural and educational district, home to the Yamaguchi Prefectural Library, the Yamaguchi Prefectural Government Office, the Yamaguchi Xavier Memorial Cathedral, the Yamaguchi Prefectural Yamaguchi Museum, Ruriko-ji Temple, and Koyama Park. To protect the artworks and ensure a pleasant environment, please follow these rules: Please set mobile phones to silent mode and refrain from using them inside the galleries. Photography, video recording, and sketching are strictly prohibited. Do not touch the artworks or display cases. Eating and drinking (including water, candy, or gum) and bringing in plants or insects are prohibited. Umbrellas should be left at the designated umbrella stands. The facility is accessible, offering wheelchair/stroller rentals, multi-functional restrooms, and is pet-friendly for service animals.
