The Yamagata Grand Fireworks Display is a massive, large-scale fireworks event held annually in Yamagata City, Yamagata Prefecture. The history of this festival dates back to 1980. Originally, the event was held along the banks of the Mamigasaki River within Yamagata City with a much smaller scale of approximately 1,000 shells. Over the decades, the event has evolved significantly, growing into a massive production involving tens of thousands of shells. While the original location faced safety challenges regarding fire hazards from sparks, the event moved to its current location to allow for even more dynamic and large-scale displays. The festival continues to evolve with the times; for instance, the 40th anniversary featured live broadcasts on terrestrial TV and YouTube, bringing the tradition to a digital audience worldwide.
The greatest highlight is undoubtedly the overwhelming volume of the display that completely fills the night sky. The sight of colorful lights blooming across the darkness is nothing short of a masterpiece of light art. The festival also embraces technological evolution, having previously featured groundbreaking collaborations between fireworks and water screens. The festival is held every year on August 14th during the Obon season in mid-summer. To fully enjoy the atmosphere, we recommend arriving at the venue slightly before the official start time (usually around 19:30) to feel the rising excitement of the crowd. The process of the sky gradually darkening before the first bursts of light is part of the magic. Please note that the event may proceed in light rain, but may be canceled in the event of severe weather or storms. Always check the official status before heading out.
To enjoy the display more comfortably, it is highly recommended to purchase reserved seating tickets.
