Located in the Yamada district, the Yamada Sunflower Garden is a special destination where you can witness the blooming of autumn sunflowers for approximately one month in November. Unlike the bright yellow sunflowers of summer, these flowers feature a deep, rich golden hue that characterizes the season. The visual impact is heightened by the striking contrast between the golden petals, the crisp blue autumn sky, and the vibrant autumn foliage of the surrounding Mount Takatori. In 2022, the landscape of the Yamada sunflowers and the Haze tree foliage was officially recognized as a 'Saga Prefecture Heritage,' highlighting its significant cultural and natural value.
The tradition of cultivating sunflowers in this area began as an initiative to revitalize and utilize abandoned terraced rice fields. Originally planted by a local community group to preserve the landscape, the cultivation is now managed by a local town organization as of 2025. This effort ensures that the area continues to showcase a changing face of beauty throughout the seasons, preserving the traditional agricultural landscape of the region.
The primary attraction is the blooming of the sunflowers from early to mid-November. The sight of the golden-yellow petals against the deep blue sky, framed by the changing colors of the mountains, is truly spectacular. On certain days, if the weather permits, you might even witness the rare sight of light snow dusting the golden sunflowers. Because of this unique beauty, many professional and amateur photographers gather during weekends and holidays when the flowers are in full bloom to capture the scene.
