Yamada Bokujo is a vast ranch located at an altitude of 1,500 meters on the southern foot of Mt. Kasatake in Takayama Village, Nagano Prefecture. Situated within the Joetsu-Nagano National Park, the ranch covers an area of approximately 159 hectares. During the summer, the landscape resembles the high plateaus of Switzerland, offering a peaceful sight of cattle grazing freely in the lush greenery. The ranch also serves as a multi-purpose facility, featuring the 'Carillon Hall' open-air music hall, which hosts various cultural events and outdoor gatherings.
Since its establishment in 1902, Yamada Bokujo has coexisted with the natural environment of this region. The ranch utilizes the unique topography of the area for grazing, creating an ideal environment for raising high-quality, robust cattle. The ranch is particularly renowned for its high-quality Japanese Black cattle, including the prestigious lineage of the bull 'Kuranosankofuku,' which has garnered significant attention both within and outside the prefecture for its superior genetic traits.
The greatest draw is the sight of cattle grazing across the vast, rolling grasslands. The livestock consists of approximately 70% Japanese Black cattle, 20% Holstein cattle, and 10% other breeds, with over 100 head of cattle grazing here annually. Thanks to its location at the foot of Mt. Kasatake, visitors can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view of the Northern Alps and the 'Hoshin Five Peaks,' including Mt. Myoko, Mt. Kurohime, and the Asama mountain range. Additionally, the Carillon Hall, a multi-purpose facility made of larch wood, often hosts seasonal events such as music festivals and yoga retreats.
The grazing season typically runs from mid-May to the end of October. The summer months (June to August) are especially recommended, as the crisp mountain air and the sight of cattle amidst highland flora create a refreshing atmosphere. The area is also a famous spot for viewing the sunset over the Northern Alps, where the changing colors of the sky and the silhouettes of the mountains create a dramatic spectacle. In winter, the surrounding area is often utilized for winter sports activities.
There are numerous ways to enjoy the natural surroundings. You can enjoy trekking up Mt. Kasatake (about 40 minutes from the base) or taking a relaxing stroll along the hydrangea-lined paths. The Carillon Hall also hosts seasonal events like summer festivals and wellness-focused activities like yoga, allowing you to feel the deep connection with the highland air.
Mt. Kasatake, standing at 2,076 meters, is located nearby. It is only about a 10-minute drive from the ranch to the base of the mountain. The hiking trails are well-maintained, making it easy for visitors to enjoy a light climb and witness the stunning views of the surrounding rock formations and mountain ranges from the summit.
