Yagi no Shidareume (Murakami Residence) is a stunning plum blossom viewing spot located in Yagi Umawari, Minamiajio City, Hyogo Prefecture. This site is known as an 'Open Garden,' where the private garden of the Murakami residence is opened to the public specifically during the plum blossom season. The centerpiece is a magnificent weeping plum tree that is approximately 70 years old, standing 8 meters tall with a width of about 10 meters. From late February, the landscape is transformed into a dreamlike scene where pale pink blossoms appear to cascade down from the branches like a floral shower.
This location holds cultural significance as the 56th station of the 'Awaji Hana Henro' (Flower Pilgrimage). The garden was meticulously crafted by the owner, Mr. Murakami, as a personal passion, and he opens the garden to the public to share the seasonal beauty of the plum blossoms. The site is occasionally featured in the media due to its unique natural beauty. Beyond the plum blossoms, the garden showcases a cycle of seasonal plants, including Spiraea and Azaleas, which bloom in succession.
The primary attraction is the overwhelming scale of the weeping plum tree. The sight of dense, pale pink blossoms creates a visual effect similar to a pink shower falling from the sky. Depending on the blooming status, the garden also hosts night-time illuminations. During these events, you can witness a completely different side of the plum blossoms, illuminated by light against the darkness. As the season progresses, the fallen petals create a beautiful pink carpet on the ground.
The most recommended time to visit is from late February to mid-March, with the peak typically occurring in early March. Visiting during daylight hours allows you to clearly appreciate the delicate colors and the elegant structure of the branches. However, if you visit during the illumination periods, you can experience the magical atmosphere of the night-time display. Following the plum season, the garden transitions to Spiraea (mid-March) and Azaleas (early May).
The main activity here is the peaceful contemplation of nature. You can immerse yourself in the seasonal scents and the vast, sweeping branches of the plum tree. Additionally, as the 56th station of the 'Awaji Hana Henro' pilgrimage, visitors can participate in the cultural experience of collecting stamps. The stamp stations are located along the road from the parking area to the Murakami residence.
Located in a lush, natural area of Minamiajio City, this spot is a perfect addition to an Awaji Island sightseeing itinerary. The area is best explored by car, and you can plan a scenic driving route that follows the seasonal botanical cycles of the region.
Please respect the natural environment and the privacy of the residents. As this is a private residence, entering restricted areas is strictly prohibited. The parking area is an unpaved lot, so it may become muddy after rain; we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. If you wish to participate in the pilgrimage, please bring your own stamp tools or check the station setup. Please be mindful of the local residents and maintain a quiet, respectful presence.
