Yagami Castle is a medieval mountain castle located in Tanba-Sasayama City, Hyogo Prefecture. It is situated on Mount Takajo (elevation 460m) and the adjacent Mount Hokoji (elevation 340m), positioned in the southern-central part of the Sasayama Basin. The castle's location provides a commanding view over the Yagami area, where the San'in Kaido historically passed through. The site features a classic medieval mountain castle structure, with the main castle and subsidiary castles arranged around the town, and is officially designated as a National Historic Site. The extensive remains offer a profound look into the history of Japanese castle architecture.
The main castle served as the stronghold of the Hatano clan, local lords of Tanba Province, during the medieval and Sengoku (Warring States) periods. It is also known as 'Yagami Takajo.' Historical records note that the castle was once besieged by the famous warlord Akechi Mitsuhide. During the Edo period, Matsudaira Yasushige, a son of Tokugawa Ieyasu, resided here; however, the castle was eventually abandoned following the construction of Sasayama Castle as part of the Shogunate's defensive restructuring. Today, it remains a vital site for understanding the history of Japanese mountain fortifications.
The ruins of Yagami Castle are characterized by the preservation of typical medieval mountain castle structures, including 'kurawa' (plateaus/enclosures), stone walls, earthen ramparts, and 'kirikiri' (moats/trenches). While some parts of the central core show signs of later Muromachi-period renovations, other sections like the 'obi-kurawa' (belt-like enclosures) retain much older medieval forms, utilizing the natural, irregular terrain. The castle employs a 'renkakushiki' (linked-enclosure) layout, allowing visitors to observe the sophisticated, three-dimensional defensive design of a classic Japanese mountain fortress.
