Yaegaki Shrine is a sacred site located in Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture. It is deeply connected to the mythological tale of Susanoo-no-Mikoto and Kushinadahime, making it a premier destination for those seeking 'En-musubi' (the blessing of matchmaking and good connections). The shrine grounds are filled with elements that evoke the world of ancient myths, such as the mystical Kagami-no-Ike (Mirror Pond) and the Meoto Sugi (Couple Cedars), which symbolize inseparable love.
The history of the shrine is ancient. According to legend, when Susanoo-no-Mikoto defeated the Yamata-no-Orochi, he created a protective barrier (Yaegaki) around a large cedar tree to hide Kushinadahime from danger. The current main hall was constructed in the mid-Edo period, and the worship hall was rebuilt in 1964. Notably, the wall of the main hall features an important cultural property: a painted figure believed to date back to the Muromachi period. This site serves as a living testament to the profound episodes of Japanese mythology.
Deep within the shrine grounds lies the 'Okunoin' area, which houses the sacred Kagami-no-Ike (Mirror Pond). This pond is said to represent the mirror that reflected Kushinadahime's image while she was in hiding. Another must-see is the 'Meoto Sugi' (Couple Cedars), where two trees have merged into one, and the 'Meoto Tsubaki' (Couple Camellias), both of which are celebrated as symbols of eternal love and devotion. These natural wonders allow visitors to feel a close connection to the mythical era.
While the shrine maintains a sacred atmosphere year-round, certain seasons offer unique spiritual experiences. On May 3rd, the 'Mikakushi Shinji' ritual is held, featuring a procession from the main hall to the Meoto Sugi to reenact the mythological scene. Additionally, the annual festival (Reisai) takes place on October 20th. We recommend visiting during daylight hours to clearly observe the shimmering surface of the Kagami-no-Ike Pond and the lush surrounding greenery.
The most famous activity is the 'Zeni Uranai' (Money Divination) at Kagami-no-Ike Pond. To participate, place a small coin on a thin sheet of paper (available at the shrine office) and float it on the pond. If the paper floats far away, it is said you will find a distant connection; if it sinks quickly, your connection will be made soon. It is recommended to use a 10-yen or 100-yen coin. Legend says if a newt crosses over the paper, it is a sign of an exceptionally wonderful destiny.
The area around the shrine is dotted with historical and natural landmarks. Nearby spots include the Iu River, the Shimane Prefectural Yakumo Tatsu Fudoki no Oka, and the Okada Mountain Kofun. Other nearby shrines, such as Manai Shrine and Tamakuni Shrine, are also part of the historical landscape of Matsue, making it easy to plan a cultural route through the region.
We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes as the shrine grounds feature natural terrain. If you wish to try the Money Divination, please prepare 10-yen or 100-yen coins in advance. The shrine office is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and prayer (Kito) requests are accepted from 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM. Please note that prayer services may not be available during specific festivals or weddings, so checking in advance is advised.
