Yaedake is a mountain rising 453.4 meters above sea level, located on the Motobu Peninsula in northern Okinawa. It is the second highest peak on Okinawa Island, following Yonaha Dake, and is celebrated as the highest point of the Motobu Peninsula. The greatest draw of this mountain is the approximately 4-kilometer stretch of Kanihizakura (寒緋桜 - winter-blooming pink cherry blossoms) planted along the road leading to the summit. With about 7,000 trees in bloom, the mountain turns a brilliant scarlet color starting in late January, creating an iconic landscape that symbolizes the arrival of spring in Okinawa.
Yaedake possesses a rich history alongside its natural beauty. The current cherry blossom avenue was shaped by a planting project supported by the Ryukyu-US Friendship Foundation in 1963. The area also holds historical significance related to the Battle of Okinawa; in 1945, it was a site of intense conflict between Japanese and American forces. Today, it has transitioned into a peaceful destination that symbolizes the harmony between nature and history. The region also has a history of indigo cultivation, reflecting the cultural evolution of the local community.
The highlight of Yaedake is undoubtedly the winding road lined with Kanihizakura. The sight of thousands of vibrant pink blossoms stretching from the mid-mountain to the summit is truly spectacular. From the peak, visitors can enjoy a sweeping panoramic view of the northern Okinawa landscape, including the Kunigami Mountains, and the beautiful surrounding islands such as Iejima, Sesoko Island, and Minna Island. Additionally, the 'Yaedake Sakura Forest Park' located halfway up the mountain provides well-maintained facilities and multipurpose spaces, making it an ideal spot for families to relax.
The best time to visit Yaedake is from late January to March, when the Kanihizakura are in full bloom. The area becomes particularly lively starting in mid-January with the 'Motobu Yaedake Sakura Festival.' Because the summit is at a higher altitude, the temperature tends to be slightly cooler than the coastal areas, which helps preserve the vivid color of the blossoms. To fully enjoy the contrast between the scarlet flowers, the blue sky, and the turquoise sea, we recommend visiting during bright daylight hours.
Visitors can enjoy leisurely walks through the natural scenery. A road provides vehicular access all the way to the summit area, allowing you to enjoy the view of the cherry blossoms directly from your car window. There are also well-maintained walking paths through the natural forest for those who wish to hike and experience the mountain's ecosystem. The summit features a triangulation station, making it a popular spot for hiking, picnics, and family leisure activities. It is a perfect place to experience the unique biodiversity and breathtaking vistas of Okinawa.
The area around Yaedake includes the 'Sakura no Mori Park' managed by Motobu Town, which is well-equipped for family outings. Nearby, you can find major attractions like Ocean Expo Park, making Yaedake a perfect addition to a northern Okinawa sightseeing itinerary. The scenic drive through this area is highly popular due to the stunning views of nearby islands like Iejima and Sesoko Island.
