Ao no Domon (Blue Gate) is a magnificent natural rock gate located in the Yabakei area of Nakatsu City, Oita Prefecture. Situated at the foot of the Kyoshu Peak, which rises steeply above the Yamaguni River, the structure spans approximately 342 meters in total, with the tunnel section measuring about 144 meters. It is officially designated as a historical site of Oita Prefecture and is a vital part of the Yabakei-Hita Ebisu-san Quasi-National Park. The area is also known for community-led efforts to enhance its beauty, such as the planting of Nemophila flowers to add color to the landscape.
The name "Ao" (Blue) is derived from the current district name. Historically, it was known as "Hida no Kurinuki." The names "Hida no Tunnel" and "Ao no Domon" became established between the late Edo period and the Taisho era. In the 1906 guidebook "Yabakei Annaiki," it was described as a "mountain shadow excavation or gate," highlighting its long-standing history as both a vital transportation point and a scenic landmark. The site holds significant historical value, with records from the Taisho era noting its increasing importance for regional connectivity.
The most striking feature is the natural architecture of the rock gate itself, shaped by the forces of nature. The view of the sheer cliffs meeting the flow of the Yamaguni River is truly spectacular. In the spring, the landscape is transformed by the blooming of blue Nemophila flowers on the opposite bank, creating a harmonious scene with the blue sky and river. While the main experience involves passing through the gate by car, it offers a wonderful opportunity to observe the natural formations. It is a popular stop on a larger sightseeing route that includes other famous scenic spots in the Yabakei area, such as Ichimeihakkei and Sarutobi Sentsubokyo.
