Wakamatsu Beach, also known as Wakamatsu Portside Beach, is a beautiful coastal area located in Mihama Town, Chita District, Aichi Prefecture. It operates primarily as a seasonal beach during the summer months (from late June through August). The area is characterized by its wide, expansive sandy shores and calm, gentle waves, creating a peaceful landscape perfect for relaxation. The presence of local traditional inns (minshuku) in the vicinity allows visitors to experience the authentic local food culture alongside the natural beauty of the sea.
The region has a long-standing connection to the sea and fishing culture. One of the most notable cultural aspects is the local tradition related to the sea, such as the 'Tai Matsuri' (Sea Bream Festival). This vibrant event features young people parading through the town and along the coast, carrying five red sea breams made of white cloth on bamboo or wooden frames. This festival is typically held around the third weekend of July (Saturday and Sunday near July 20th), showcasing the deep-rooted traditions of the local community.
The primary appeal of Wakamatsu Beach is the breathtaking view of the calm sea stretching toward the horizon, paired with the long, continuous sandy beach. During the summer, beach houses like 'Chunichi Beach House' are set up to provide essential amenities and a place for visitors to rest and enjoy the ocean breeze. The main operating period for the beach facilities is from late June to August 31st. This is the best time to visit to ensure that beach houses and various amenities are fully operational for swimming and seaside activities. A beautiful natural phenomenon to observe is the change in the shoreline during low tide, when the receding waters reveal a much wider expanse of sand.
