Wajima Kobo Nagaya is a dedicated facility designed to convey the profound charm of Wajima-nuri, the traditional lacquerware of Wajima City, Ishikawa Prefecture. Visitors can engage in hands-on lacquerware production workshops, consult on the repair of cherished pieces, and purchase high-quality lacquerware. The facility itself is designed with traditional Japanese architectural elements, creating a harmonious space that reflects the elegance and beauty of the lacquerware on display.
The history of this site is deeply tied to a great fire that occurred in the Kawai-cho district of central Wajima in 1910. In the following year, longhouses (nagaya) were constructed on the site of a relocated temple to provide housing for those who lost their homes in the fire. This area became a thriving community for Wajima-nuri artisans, fostering the development of the region's unique industry. Although the original structures aged over time, the current Wajima Kobo Nagaya was established in 2003 to recreate and preserve the vibrant atmosphere of the past.
Within the facility, you can learn about the intricate techniques of Wajima-nuri and the unique properties of natural lacquer. The center features collections of exquisite lacquerware and areas where you can observe artisans at work, offering a direct connection to Japanese aesthetic sensibilities. The architecture itself is a highlight, featuring exposed wooden pillars, beams, and traditional spaces such as wooden counters and tatami mats, which provide a sense of timeless tranquility.
The facility is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. It is generally best to visit during daylight hours for lacquerware production workshops or repair consultations to fully appreciate the colors and textures. Regardless of the season, the traditional Japanese atmosphere offers a peaceful and calming environment for all visitors.
The most significant attraction is the lacquerware production workshop. A typical workshop (e.g., approximately 2,000 JPY) takes between 20 minutes to 1 hour. Additionally, the facility accepts requests for lacquerware repairs, providing support to ensure that your precious, well-used pieces can be used for many years to come.
Located in the Kawai-cho area of Wajima City, the facility is surrounded by the traditional streetscapes of Wajima. A visit here is an excellent way to deepen your understanding of Wajima-nuri culture while exploring the historic scenery of the surrounding neighborhood.
When participating in workshops, comfortable clothing that allows for fine motor movements is recommended. As you will be working with lacquer, please be mindful of your clothing to avoid any stains. Regarding photography, please confirm with the staff before taking photos inside the facility. While cash, credit cards, and some transportation IC cards may be accepted, please verify the exact payment methods in advance. For workshops, reservations can be made for groups of up to 15 people.
