Uzumino-michi is a 450-meter long circular walkway built within the structural space of the Onaruto Bridge, spanning the Naruto Strait in Naruto City, Tokishima Prefecture. While positioned high above the sea surface, the walkway features transparent glass windows in the floor, allowing visitors to observe the intense currents and swirling whirlpools of the Naruto Strait from a direct, breathtaking perspective. By utilizing the unique structure of the Onaruto Bridge, this facility offers the sensation of walking above the ocean, providing a visual feast of the dynamic movements created by nature.
The Naruto Strait is renowned globally for its powerful currents, often compared to the Strait of Messina in Italy or the Seymour Narrows in Canada. Historically, the whirlpools caused by the ebb and flow of the tides have been a source of wonder and fascination in this region. To bring this natural phenomenon closer to people, Uzumino-michi was constructed using modern architectural techniques within the Onaruto Bridge. This unique design allows visitors to feel the mechanism of the tides from a high vantage point, blending engineering with natural spectacle.
The greatest highlight is looking down through the glass floor to see the whirlpools directly beneath you. During spring tides, the current can reach speeds of over 20 km/h, creating massive whirlpools that can exceed 20 to 30 meters in diameter. The 450m walkway provides a continuous, immersive experience as you walk through the bridge structure. The appearance of the whirlpools depends heavily on the tides (tidal cycles).
