The Urusumi Nanohana Flower Fields are a beloved local landmark located along the coast of Iyo City, Ehime Prefecture. These fields are meticulously maintained by local residents and feature a stunning 200-meter stretch of bright yellow rapeseed flowers (nanohana) running alongside the JR Ai Ai Iyonada Line. The most striking feature is the vivid color contrast between the brilliant yellow blossoms and the deep blue of the Seto Inland Sea, creating a picturesque landscape that captures the essence of spring.
Historically, this area was primarily known for its citrus (mikan) orchards. To revitalize the local community and promote tourism, the landscape was transformed into flower fields. Today, it is celebrated as a place where visitors can enjoy different seasonal blooms. The preservation of this scenery is a community effort, with local residents working together to maintain the natural beauty and the harmony between the flowers and the coastal environment.
The greatest attraction is the arrival of spring. As the season changes, the yellow flowers bloom in abundance, creating a 'yellow carpet' effect. A particularly special way to experience this is by riding the JR Iyo-nada Line, especially the sightseeing train 'Iyonada Monogatari.' Looking out from the train window, you can witness the breathtaking view of the yellow fields meeting the sea. Depending on the exact timing, you may also see other yellow-themed flora like mimosa or yellow narcissus, adding variety to the landscape.
The peak season for the rapeseed flowers is from mid-February to March. This is the most photogenic period when the colors are at their most intense. Interestingly, in October, the area can also be a site for observing the migration of the Painted Lady butterfly, offering a different kind of natural spectacle during the autumn months.
During the peak season in March, the area often hosts the 'Urusumi Nanohana Festival.' This event allows visitors to experience local culture through food, such as the sale of freshly made 'Nanohana Mochi' (rapeseed flower rice cakes). The area is also a popular spot for light walking and strolls. Please note that as this is a natural area, there is no street lighting at night, so it is highly recommended to visit during daylight hours.
Near the flower fields, you can find local eateries that serve traditional regional flavors. For instance, some shops offer delicious takoyaki (octopus balls), making it a perfect place to enjoy a quick snack while exploring the scenic coastline.
For a comfortable stroll, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes and dressing appropriately for the weather. Since this is a natural environment, please be mindful of your surroundings. If you are walking with pets, please ensure they are on a leash and that you clean up after them. As there is no lighting at night, please plan your visit during the day to ensure safety.
