Utsukushimori is a scenic hill located at an altitude of 1,542 meters in Hokuto City, Yamanashi Prefecture. Situated to the east of Mt. Akadake, this area is renowned as a natural scenic spot that becomes vibrantly colored during the early summer. The summit features an observation deck that provides breathtaking views of the surrounding mountain ranges. At the foot of the hill, there is a free parking lot and a tourist information center. The hiking trails are well-maintained, making it possible to reach the summit in a relatively short amount of time, even for casual walkers.
The topography of this area is characterized by a detached ridge that forms part of the eastern ridge of Mt. Akadake. While it appears as a gentle, rounded hill, it remains a deeply preserved natural environment as part of the larger mountain system. The area is home to various natural treasures, including the Great Yama Tsutsuji (an officially designated natural monument), highlighting its importance as a local natural heritage site. It is also recognized as one of the 'Kai Hyakusan' (100 mountains of Kai), a place long cherished by locals and visitors for enjoying the profound beauty of nature.
The most striking feature of Utsukushimori is the seasonal transformation of its flora. From early to mid-June, approximately 1,000 Renge Tsutsuji (Azalea) flowers bloom in unison, painting the hillside in a brilliant shade of orange. This spectacle is unique to this specific season. Additionally, the summit observation deck offers a spectacular 360-degree panoramic view. On clear days, visitors can see the Southern Alps, the Yatsugatake Mountains, and even distant mountain ranges, making it a premier spot for photography and sightseeing.
The best time to visit is from May to June. Specifically, the peak bloom for the Renge Tsutsuji occurs from early to mid-June; visiting during this window ensures you witness the flowers in their full glory. It is highly recommended to visit during the daytime when the weather is bright and clear. High visibility during these hours allows for a sharp, unobstructed view of the ridges of the Southern Alps and Yatsugatake. Because the colors of the vegetation change with the seasons, the landscape offers a different aesthetic depending on when you arrive.
The hike to the summit takes approximately 15 minutes, making it an accessible trail even for beginners or families. As you walk along the well-maintained paths, you can observe the local flora and the unique geological features of the hill. Once at the summit, the observation deck provides a perfect spot to soak in the high-altitude atmosphere and the vast landscape. For more experienced hikers, there are also routes that connect to the Mt. Akadake area via the Shinkyo-ji ridge, offering a more rigorous trekking experience.
At the base of Utsukushimori lies the beautiful Kiyosato Plateau and the Kobuchizawa area. This region is dotted with various tourist facilities, including hotels, restaurants, and local shops, allowing visitors to combine their nature walks with local gourmet experiences and comfortable stays. Since the area is easily accessible by car, it is a popular stop for travelers exploring scenic driving routes through the Yamanashi highlands.
When hiking, please wear comfortable clothing and sturdy, non-slip shoes. As temperatures can drop near the summit even in summer, bringing a light jacket or an extra layer is highly recommended. Regarding payments, please check with local facilities regarding whether they accept cash, credit cards, or IC cards. While the observation deck and trails are open year-round, please respect the natural environment by taking all your trash home and strictly adhering to the rule of no plant collection.
