The history of Camp Courtney dates back to 1956, following the relocation of the 3rd Marine Division from Camp McGill in Yokosuka, Kanagawa. The base was named in honor of Major Henry A. Courtney, a recipient of the Medal of Honor during the Battle of Okinawa in 1945. Interestingly, the grounds also contain historical sites such as the Henza Castle ruins and Henza Shell Mounds, though access to these archaeological sites is limited due to the nature of the military installation.
