Urasoe Ooka Park is a vast recreational space located in Urasoe City, Okinawa. It seamlessly blends natural beauty with historical elements and modern leisure facilities. Situated at an elevation of 130 meters, the park's greatest highlight is the 360-degree panoramic view of the East China Sea and the surrounding urban landscape. Whether you are traveling with family or looking to immerse yourself in the history of the Ryukyu Kingdom, this park offers a multi-faceted experience for all visitors.
The park contains significant historical sites that tell the story of the Ryukyu Kingdom. Most notably, the 'History Learning Zone' features the ruins of Urasoe Castle, believed to have been constructed in the late 14th century. As a vital stronghold for the Ryukyu Kingdom, the site preserves stone walls and castle gates that showcase the architectural-sophistication and culture of that era. Additionally, the area includes sites of high historical value, such as the Urasoe Yodore, associated with important figures like King Eiso and King Sho Nei.
The park is divided into three distinct themed zones. First, the observation deck at 130m elevation provides a breathtaking vantage point for viewing the East China Sea. Second, the 'Fureai Plaza Zone' is perfect for children, featuring large roller sliders and play equipment set on soft rubber flooring for safety. Third, the 'History Learning Zone' allows visitors to explore castle ruins and ancient tombs to learn about the Ryukyu Kingdom. Finally, the 'Relaxation Zone' features the 'Toyama Ishidatami-michi' (Stone Paved Path) along the Makiminato River, offering a beautiful landscape where nature and culture converge.
While the park is accessible year-round, it offers different charms depending on the season. From February to April, the landscape is particularly beautiful with blooming cherry blossoms and plum blossoms. While daytime is perfect for enjoying the panoramic views, the evening offers a spectacular view of the sunset over the East China Sea. The park also hosts seasonal events periodically, providing unique opportunities to experience local culture.
There are plenty of ways to enjoy the park, from playing on large-scale equipment to peaceful nature walks. At the first floor of the observation deck, you can enjoy a meal at the 'Ishigufu' Okinawa Soba shop while taking in the view. The park also offers educational experiences, such as insect-themed workshops or stargazing events. Visitors can also enjoy a relaxing picnic using the many benches and paths provided throughout the grounds.
Near the park is the Urasoe Citizen Stadium, well-known as a training camp site for professional baseball. Every February, the Tokyo Yakult Swallows hold their training camp here, making it a great idea to combine a visit to the park with a baseball game. The park is also conveniently located about a 25-minute drive from Naha city center, making it an easy stop during an Okinawa sightseeing tour.
The park covers a large area with significant changes in elevation. We highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. As there are stairs and slopes to access the observation deck and various zones, please prepare accordingly. There are plenty of benches and gazebos for resting. Access is easiest by car, and the park provides a large parking area with 250 spaces.
