Upopoy (National Ainu Museum and Park) is a national center located in Shiraoi, Hokkaido, dedicated to the revival, creation, and development of Ainu culture. The name "Upopoy" means "to sing together" in the Ainu language, symbolizing a space where people gather to learn and pass culture down to the next generation.
This facility is more than just a museum; it is a vast area comprising the National Ainu Museum, the National Ainu Park, and memorial facilities. Visitors can learn about the history, unique spirituality, and traditional lifestyles of the Ainu people through multi-faceted approaches including exhibitions, live demonstrations, hands-on experiences, and the surrounding natural environment. It serves as a vital hub for presenting the dignity of the Ainu as an indigenous people and demonstrating how diverse cultures can coexist harmoniously.
The promotion of Ainu culture has faced challenges such as the decline of traditional knowledge-holders and the threat to the Ainu language and traditional crafts. In response, the "National Ainu Museum and Park" was developed to foster cultural revival and ensure the transmission of heritage to future generations, recognizing the Ainu as an indigenous people.
The project progressed following the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and domestic resolutions recognizing the Ainu. Opened to the public in July 2020, the site is managed by the Foundation for Ainu Culture to protect and share the precious history, natural views, and spiritual culture of the Ainu with the world.
