Unsho-ji is a Buddhist temple located in Kitaura, Oga City, Akita Prefecture. Its most iconic feature is the vast expanse of hydrangeas blooming throughout the temple grounds. The collection, which has grown to over 1,500 plants, turns the landscape into a vibrant blue carpet during the peak season, creating a visual spectacle unlike any other. Beyond the flowers, the scenic view of the Kitaura port town and the Oga sea provides a breathtaking backdrop, blending natural beauty with a serene spiritual atmosphere.
This stunning landscape has been carefully nurtured by the temple's deputy chief priest over many years. Through 15 years of dedicated cultivation, the density and color of the flowers have been perfected, resulting in a unique landscape where the hydrangeas bloom in thick, lush clusters. As a place where one can feel the transition of seasons amidst the quiet air of a traditional temple, it remains a vital cultural and scenic resource for the local community.

The primary attraction is the dense clusters of hydrangeas found throughout the grounds. The focus on cultivating specific shades of blue creates a powerful visual impact that is perfect for photography. Additionally, the view of the Oga sea stretching out beyond the flowers is a highlight, as the contrast between the blue blossoms and the blue ocean continues to captivate visitors.
The hydrangea season typically runs from mid-June to early July, with the peak beauty occurring in late June. While daytime visits offer bright and clear views, the evening hours are highly recommended. During the sunset hours, the light hitting the hydrangeas creates a much more ethereal and dreamy atmosphere, offering a different side of the scenery than the bright daylight.

Visitors can enjoy seasonal-limited hydrangea viewing while strolling along paths surrounded by flowers, feeling the essence of early summer in Japan. After your visit, a popular way to complete your trip is to head to nearby restaurants to enjoy fresh local seafood, integrating your temple visit with the culinary charms of the Oga region.
Located in the heart of the Kitaura area, Unsho-ji is surrounded by the rich natural landscapes of Oga. There are many local eateries nearby where you can enjoy fresh seafood. To make your trip even more rewarding, consider visiting nearby attractions such as the Oga Aquarium GAO.
