Unryuin is a historic temple belonging to the Shingon Sect (Senen-ji school) and is celebrated as the 40th station of the Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage. Known by its mountain name Rurizan, the temple maintains a prestigious status due to its close historical ties with the Japanese Imperial Family. The main hall, known as 'Ryoke-den,' is designated as an Important Cultural Property. Its magnificent architecture and the surrounding lush gardens offer visitors a profound sense of tranquility and spiritual calm.
The history of Unryuin is exceptionally ancient, founded in 1372 by Emperor Koko. Later, Emperor En'yu established the Ryoke-den and began the practice of sutra copying (Myoho Shakyo) here. Despite enduring numerous fires and periods of conflict throughout the centuries, the temple has been faithfully reconstructed and has preserved its traditions to this day. As a high-ranking temple frequently visited by successive Emperors, it holds a prestigious position in Japanese history. The Reimei-den hall houses the tablets of past Emperors and members of the Imperial Family, allowing visitors to feel the immense historical weight of this sacred ground.
One of the greatest attractions is the 'Ryoke-den,' the main hall and an Important Cultural Property. Its solemn and majestic presence is truly awe-inspiring. The temple grounds also feature several historical structures, such as the Reimei-den, a prestigious space established through various donations during the Meiji era. Unryuin reveals a different-colored face with every season. A particularly magical experience is the seasonal night illumination, often held in the spring. As soft lights illuminate the temple grounds at night, the scent of seasonal flowers fills the air, creating a dreamlike atmosphere that differs greatly from the daytime. In winter, the temple offers a different kind of beauty, where the silent gardens are blanketed in a serene, silver world of snow.

Unryuin is located within the grounds of Sennyu-ji Temple. The surrounding Higashiyama area is dotted with many historical temples, making it an excellent route for those wishing to explore Kyoto's deep history. It is easily accessible from the Tofuku-ji area, making it a perfect addition to a Kyoto sightseeing itinerary.
