Kumoba Pond is a beautiful body of water located in Karuizawa, Kitasaku District, Nagano Prefecture. It has long been affectionately known by foreign residents and visitors as "Swan Lake." The pond is fed by the pure, natural spring water known as Ozen-mizu. A well-maintained approximately 1km walking path circles the pond, allowing visitors to enjoy the stunning reflections of trees on the water's surface and observe local wildlife, such as the common moorhen.
During the Meiji and Taisho eras, when Karuizawa was being developed as a premier summer resort for international visitors, this area served as a prestigious strolling course for the wealthy. The name "Ozen-mizu" (meaning 'Imperial Meal Water') stems from the historical significance of the water, which was used during an imperial visit by the Emperor. Additionally, local folklore tells of the "Daidarabotchi" (a legendary giant), suggesting the pond's shape is actually a footprint left by the giant.
The primary attraction of Kumoba Pond is the seasonal transformation of its scenery. From spring to summer, the lush green canopy is reflected beautifully in the water. In autumn, the landscape turns into a vibrant tapestry of red and gold maples. In winter, the pond offers a serene, snow-covered landscape. The 1km perimeter path is relatively flat, making it an easy route to experience nature up close regardless of your fitness level.
The scenery changes dramatically with the seasons. For the best autumn colors, visit between early October and early November, with the peak brilliance occurring from late October to early November when the contrast between the colorful maple and beech trees and the water is most striking. Visitors can also enjoy the fresh greenery of summer and the peaceful, white landscapes of winter.
The most popular way to experience the pond is by walking the 1km circular path. Because the path is flat and well-maintained, it is a relaxing way to enjoy a stroll while observing the changing light and the birds that gather around the water.
The area surrounding Kumoba Pond features various cultural landmarks, including art museums and historical sites, making it a key part of a classic Karuizawa sightseeing itinerary. Nearby, the Hotel Kashimanomori provides a beautiful setting, and its grounds are also connected to the natural water sources that feed the pond.
