Umi-Kongo is a breathtaking natural scenic spot located in Kushimoto Town, Higashimuro District, Wakayama Prefecture. Situated within the Yoshino-Kumano National Park, it lies just below the cliffs of Cape Takanosu on Kiisjima Island. The name is said to be inspired by the famous Mount Geumgang in the Korean Peninsula. The coastline is characterized by a series of sharp, jagged rock formations that rise dramatically from the sea. The sight of massive boulders, some shaped like pyramids and others resembling the head of a lion, set against the crashing waves, creates a truly powerful and awe-inspiring landscape.
The area's name originates from the connection to the famous Mount Geumgang. As a significant natural landmark, it was selected in January 1983 by the Asahi Shimbun as one of the "100 Best Natural Landscapes in Japan to Preserve for the 21st Century." It serves as a vital part of the natural heritage of the Kiisjima area, shaped by geological processes over countless years.
The most striking feature is the shape of the massive rocks protruding from the sea. Visitors can observe a sequence of unique formations, including a rock that looks like a majestic pyramid and another resembling a lion's head. Watching these giant stones endure the relentless force of the waves is a spectacular experience. Along the coastline, you can observe the complex interplay of steep cliffs and intricate rocky reefs.
Umi-Kongo offers a beautiful view throughout the year. The impression of the landscape changes significantly depending on the weather and the time of day. On clear days, the sharp outlines of the rocks are vividly defined, while during rough weather, the power of the waves crashing against the rocks adds a sense of intense drama. A typical visit lasts about 30 minutes, which is enough time to enjoy the surrounding scenery and take photographs.
Visitors can enjoy observing the natural coastal scenery. It is a perfect place to contemplate the unique shapes of the giant rocks and the way they stand against the sea. The area is easily accessible by car, with well-maintained parking areas available for visitors.
The area around Umi-Kongo is rich with other tourist attractions. Nearby landmarks on Kiisjima include the Japan-Turkey Exchange Memorial Museum, the Turkish Memorial, the Ertugrul Shipwreck Monument, and the Kashinozaki Lighthouse. Other famous nearby sites include Kushimoto Marine Park, Cape Shionomisaki (the southernmost tip of Honshu), Hashigui-Iwa Rocks, Hashigui Beach, and Koza Coast.
As this is a coastal natural site, the terrain can be uneven and potentially slippery. We strongly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. While the parking is free, please check bus schedules in advance if you are using public transportation.
