Umihotaru Parking Area is a unique facility located on an artificial island that connects the Kawasaki and Kisarazu sides of the Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line. Surrounded by the sea on all sides, it offers the sensation of being on a "floating island." The observation deck provides a vast panoramic view of Tokyo Bay, making it a popular destination for both travelers taking a break and tourists seeking sightseeing. The facility is well-equipped with restaurants, shops, a footbath, and an amusement corner, ensuring an enriching stay.
The Kisarazu Artificial Island, where this facility is located, was constructed to connect the undersea tunnel and the bridge sections of the Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line. The name "Umihotaru" (meaning "Sea Firefly") was chosen through a public competition and represents the light floating upon the sea. A mascot character inspired by the sea firefly can be seen throughout the facility. Furthermore, the night views in this area are officially designated as a "Japan Night View Heritage" site, highlighting its significant cultural and scenic value as a glowing island in the dark sea.
There are many attractions within Umihotaru. The most prominent feature is the observation deck, which offers a 360-degree panoramic view. On clear days, you can see far into the distance, creating a sense of unity with the ocean. On the 1st floor, you can see the "Cutter Face," a massive monument that allows you to feel the history of the shield machines used to excavate the undersea tunnel. Additionally, the 4th floor features the "Sea View Grand Corridor," allowing you to enjoy the scenery regardless of the weather. At night, the romantic blue illuminations create a completely different, magical atmosphere compared to the daytime.
The atmosphere changes dramatically depending on the time of day. During the day, the contrast between the blue sea and sky is vivid and refreshing. At dusk, the landscape becomes dramatic as the sun sets over the horizon. At night, the facility comes alive with beautiful light displays worthy of its "Japan Night View Heritage" status, creating a mystical atmosphere. Regardless of the season, stopping by during a night drive provides a truly special experience.
Beyond being a simple rest stop, the facility offers various experiences. For example, you can relax at the footbath on the 4th floor while gazing at the sea (please note that operating hours vary by day). On the 5th floor, the "Umimegane Aqua-Line Theater" allows you to learn about the charms of Tokyo Bay through visual media. There are also plenty of elements for families, such as the "KID'S SPACE," photo-op objects, and animal art benches. You can enjoy dining, shopping, and relaxation while feeling the sea breeze.
Umihotaru connects the Kawasaki side of Kanagawa Prefecture to the Kisarazu side of Chiba Prefecture via the Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line. The Tokyo Bay Aqua-Tunnel leads toward Kawasaki, while the bridge leads toward Kisarazu. As a major route between Tokyo and Chiba, it is an essential stop for drives and a destination in its own right. It also provides excellent access to the Boso Peninsula area in Chiba, making it a key hub for scenic driving routes.
As this is an artificial island in the middle of the sea, please be aware that it is highly susceptible to weather and wind. The sea breeze can be strong, and it may feel much colder than expected depending on the season, so bringing a jacket or warm clothing is highly recommended. The use of drones (unmanned aerial vehicles) is strictly prohibited. While photography for personal enjoyment is allowed, please follow all facility rules. The facility is designed with accessibility in mind, including wheelchair-friendly restrooms and elevators, but please be mindful of other pedestrians while moving around.
