Umoregino-ya is a nationally designated special historic site located in Hikone City, Shiga Prefecture. This site is renowned as the place where Ii Naosuke, who later served as a Great Elder (Tairo) of the Edo Shogunate and played a pivotal role in the signing of the Treaty of Amity and Commerce between Japan and the United States, spent his youth. The site features historical architecture that preserves the essence of the Edo period's lifestyle and architectural styles.
While Ii Naosuke would eventually become the 13th lord of the Hikone Domain, his time spent at this residence was marked by significant challenges. The name "Umoregi" (meaning a tree buried in the ground, unseen from the outside) symbolizes the difficult circumstances he faced during this period. However, the experiences gained here laid the foundation for his later political leadership, his profound cultural knowledge, and his mastery of the tea ceremony.
The grounds are dotted with buildings that showcase traditional Japanese architectural styles. Visitors can witness the harmony between white walls and natural wood, as well as the imposing heavy wooden gates that characterize the era.
