The Umaji Forest Railway, located in Umaji Village, Kochi Prefecture, is a tourist railway that inherits the history of the former Yarase Forest Railway. A replica diesel locomotive, scaled down to two-thirds the size of an original Porter steam engine, pulls passenger cars along the tracks. A standout feature of this railway is its commitment to sustainability: the locomotive runs on biofuel produced from used cooking oil collected within the village. The journey consists of two laps around a 300m course, offering a close-up view of the breathtaking nature surrounding the Nishitaniya River.
This region was once home to the Yarase Forest Railway, one of the largest forest railway networks in Japan. Developed during the Meiji and Taisho eras to transport forest resources, this network was vital to the area's development. By 1911, the tracks connecting Tano to Umaji were completed.
