Ukido (Mangetsu-ji) is a Buddhist temple located on the shores of Lake Biwa in Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture. It is renowned for the scenery known as 'Katata no Rakugan,' one of the Omi Hakkei (eight scenic views of Omi). The temple's most striking feature is its appearance, as if it were floating upon the surface of the lake. The current structures were rebuilt in 1937 and underwent further repairs in 1982. Inside the temple grounds, you can find the Seikanon Bosatsu (Sacred Kannon) statue, which is designated as an Important Cultural Property, creating a harmonious landscape where historic architecture meets natural beauty.
The history of this temple dates back to the Heian period. Legend has it that the temple was established by the monk Keishin to pray for safety on the lake and the salvation of all living beings. The name 'Ukido' literally means 'floating temple,' a reference to its unique location that makes it appear to float on the water. The temple's formal mountain name is Kaimon-zan Mangetsu-ji. The area also holds literary significance, featuring a monument to the poet Amano Seishu, who wrote about the scenery of the early summer rain, showing that this site has been cherished by many poets and intellectuals throughout history.
The primary attraction is the Seikanon Bosatsu statue, an Important Cultural Property housed in the Kannon-do hall. Visitors can also appreciate the exquisite craftsmanship of the historic buildings while enjoying the breathtaking view of the lake. Near the Sanmon gate, you will find the monument dedicated to Amano Seishu, which commemorates the beauty of Ukido during the rainy season, allowing visitors to trace the literary and historical roots of this sacred site.
While the temple is open year-round, it is particularly beautiful during seasonal transitions. During the bright daylight hours, you can easily observe the intricate details of the architecture and the Important Cultural Property. At sunset, the silhouette of the temple against the lake creates a deeply moving and tranquil scene. The changing seasons bring different expressions to the temple, from the lush greenery of summer to the serene atmosphere of other seasons.
