Ukai, or traditional cormorant fishing, is a historic fishing method held on the Uji River during summer nights. The spectacle features three skilled female cormorant masters (Ukai-shi) who demonstrate breathtaking rope control. The sight of flickering lights dancing on the dark surface of the river, combined with the rhythmic movements of the masters, makes this a beloved symbol of the Japanese summer.
The 'U' (cormorant) used in this tradition is the Great Cormorant, a migratory bird. The masters spend years training and raising these birds with great care and affection. The bond between the master and the bird is symbolized by the 'oi-tsuna' (control rope), which connects the human and the bird during the hunt.
Currently, there are four cormorant masters in Uji, three of whom are women. The masters wear traditional attire, including the 'Kazeori Eboshi' hat and 'Koshimizo' waistbands, to perform their duties. Notably, in 2014, the first Great Cormorant born through artificial incubation in Japan, named 'Utty,' was born in Uji and continues to be raised with care by the local masters.
The greatest thrill is witnessing the technical mastery of the cormorant masters in the darkness of the night. The sight of the masters in traditional garb navigating the river while controlling the birds is truly mystical. If you choose to view the performance from a boat, you can observe the intricate movements of the masters and the moment the cormorants catch fish from a very close distance.
Ukai is primarily held during the summer months (July, August, and September). Departure times vary depending on the period:

The Uji River area is home to several UNESCO World Heritage sites, including Byodo-in Temple, the historic Uji Shrine, and Uji Upper Shrine. You can also enjoy a relaxing stroll along the river paths, such as the 'Ajirogi-no-michi,' to soak in the historical landscape.
As the event takes place by the river at night, please bring clothing appropriate for the season and the evening temperature. For group sightseeing (shared boats), registration is done on the day of the event. If you wish to rent a private boat, advanced telephone reservations are required. Please check the latest information in advance, as events may be canceled due to bad weather or rising water levels from the Amagase Dam.
