The Uheyama Rice Terraces (Uheyama no Tahada) are located in Kami Town, Hyogo Prefecture, and represent a quintessential symbol of Japan's beautiful original landscapes. Selected by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries as one of the '100 Best Rice Terraces in Japan,' this site is nationally renowned for its breathtaking beauty. The landscape is characterized by the unique, rhythmic curves of the ridges (aze) that follow the natural contours of the mountainside, offering an expansive and open view. Built upon a landform shaped by historical geological movements, these terraces represent a perfect harmony between nature and human ingenuity, preserving the traditional essence of Japanese rural life.
This area is a significant site for understanding Japan's agricultural and cultural history. Notably, it is the birthplace of the legendary bull 'Tajiri-go,' an ancestor to almost all of Japan's high-quality Black Wagyu cattle. To truly enjoy the scenery, the best times to visit are during the seasons when the fields are filled with water or when the rice is growing. Specifically, from May to June, the water-filled paddies act as a perfect mirror, reflecting the sky and surrounding mountains in a stunning 'water mirror' effect, which is ideal for photography. For the most vivid colors, visit during the bright daylight hours. To capture the dramatic interplay of light and shadow across the mountains and terraces, the morning or late afternoon hours are highly recommended.
