Ueno Onshi Park is a historic metropolitan park with a legacy dating back to 1873, when it was designated as one of Japan's first public parks. Spanning an expansive area of approximately 530,000 square meters, the park is composed of the Ueno highland and the scenic Shinobazu Pond. It serves as a vital cultural and tourism hub, hosting a dense concentration of world-class museums, art galleries, and a zoo. The area has deep historical roots, once serving as the grounds for the Kan'ei-ji Temple during the Edo period. Following the Meiji Restoration, the land became government-owned, and it eventually received the name "Onshi" (meaning 'Imperial Gift') after being presented to the city. The park celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2023. Currently, under a revitalization and maintenance plan by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, the park continues to evolve as a cornerstone of Tokyo's cultural and tourism identity.
The park offers a diverse range of flora and landscapes. It is home to approximately 1,200 cherry blossom trees, alongside ginkgo, camphor, and zelkova trees, as well as beautiful lotus flowers in the pond. The scenery is a beautiful harmony of natural elements and man-made structures, featuring wide paved plazas, fountains, and the serene waters of Shinobazu Pond.
