Ueda Castle is a flatland castle built in 1583 by the legendary Sanada Masayuki. Located near the center of the Ueda Basin, it is historically renowned as the 'unconquerable castle' for successfully repelling the massive armies of the Tokugawa clan during the first and second Battles of Ueda. Today, the castle ruins have been developed into a beautiful public park, serving as a peaceful retreat for locals and tourists alike. The stone walls, earthen embankments, and reconstructed watchtowers and gates allow visitors to feel the profound atmosphere of the Sengoku (Warring States) period.
While the Sanada clan's direct rule lasted about 40 years, this site played a crucial role as a strategic stronghold for the clan. As the 'Castle of the Sanada,' it is a subject of great interest to Japanese history enthusiasts and frequently appears in historical novels and period dramas. Although the fortifications were once dismantled after the Battle of Sekigahara, the site was later rebuilt and maintained by the Sengoku and Matsudaira clans. Today, the West Tower (a prefectural treasure), along with various reconstructed towers and the Higashi-koguchi gate, preserve the architectural spirit of the past.
The park contains various spots that evoke a sense of history. Major highlights include the Higashi-koguchi Gate, the Ueda City Museum, and the Ueda Castle Towers (North, Central, and South towers). The Sanada Shrine, dedicated to the Sanada clan, is also a significant site where people gather to pray for success in exams or victory in endeavors, adding a touch of 'Sengoku romance' to the visit. The visible stone walls and embankments provide a clear visual understanding of ancient Japanese fortification structures.
Ueda Castle reveals a different face with every season. The most spectacular time is spring during the 'Ueda Castle Senbonzakura Festival,' when approximately 1,000 cherry trees bloom, creating a dreamlike landscape, especially during the evening light-up events. Visitors can also enjoy the lush greenery of early summer, the vibrant autumn foliage, and the serene, quiet atmosphere of winter. While the park grounds are open 24 hours a day, it is best to visit during daylight hours to explore the museum and the reconstructed towers.
Beyond exploring historical architecture, visitors can participate in seasonal events. For instance, during the spring festival, 'Ninja Experiences' are sometimes held at the Sanada Ninja Training Ground. Exploring the surrounding area, such as the Yanagimachi district, is another way to enjoy the local culture. These areas offer a perfect setting for walking tours through historic streets while enjoying local delicacies and learning about the regional history.
Ueda Castle serves as an excellent starting point for exploring the surrounding castle town. The 'Yanagimachi' area, in particular, retains the charming atmosphere of the old Hokkoku Kaido highway, where you can enjoy delicious local food amidst traditional architecture. There are many other scenic spots throughout Ueda City, allowing travelers to move between different beautiful landscapes depending on the season.
As the grounds are quite extensive, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. If you plan to visit the museum or the towers, please check the opening hours in advance. To preserve the historical integrity of the site, please respect all restrictions regarding the stone walls and embankments. Payment for museum and tower entrance fees can be made via cash or credit card. While some English-language signage and exhibits are available, preparing some basic historical context beforehand will enhance your experience.
