TUNNEL OF LIGHT (Kiyotsu Gorge Tunnel) is a space that redefines the landscape of Kiyotsu Gorge in Niigata Prefecture as a work of art. The space is composed of a massive concrete structure, walls lined with stainless steel plates, and a water surface covering the floor. The most striking feature is the mirror-like reflection. The surrounding nature, the sky, and the visitors themselves are reflected in the polished walls and water, creating a unique space where reality and reflection merge. It is an extremely artistic spot where architectural beauty meets the changing colors of nature.
Originally, this area was a natural gorge along the Kiyotsu River, known for its rugged rock faces and beautiful scenery. While it was once a place for simple observation via walking paths, a pedestrian-only tunnel was constructed for safety. In 2018, as part of the 'Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale,' the space was transformed into an art piece by the Chinese artist Ma Yansong (MAD Architects). This renovation turned a simple passage into an artistic space where nature and architecture engage in a dialogue. By integrating natural elements with a modern artistic perspective, it has gained significant attention both domestically and internationally.
The greatest highlight is the 'Tunnel of Light' located at the second observation point inside the tunnel. Looking through the circular openings, the surrounding greenery, rock faces, and sky are reflected on the mirror-like walls, creating a sense of immense depth. Because the floor is covered in water, the symmetrical scenery of the sky and landscape is particularly breathtaking. You can enjoy the changing expressions of the landscape, such as the vibrant greens of spring/summer, the rich colors of autumn foliage, and the striking contrast of white snow against a blue sky in winter.
Kiyotsu Gorge offers a completely different face depending on the season. From spring to summer, the area is characterized by lush greenery and the refreshing coolness of the stream. In autumn, the surrounding trees turn into vibrant colors, deepening the reflections. In winter, the contrast between the rugged, snow-covered rocks and the clear sky adds a silvery beauty to the mirrored world. During daylight hours, natural light enters the tunnel, making the light play from the reflections most vivid. We recommend visiting during different seasons to capture these unique color shifts.
