Tsuwano Castle Ruins is a medieval mountain castle site located in Tsuwano Town, Shimane Prefecture. Although the original buildings no longer stand, the stone walls are remarkably well-preserved, offering a profound sense of historical weight. Visitors can access the site via a scenic sightseeing lift, which provides a unique perspective as you ascend toward the summit. From the top, you can enjoy a breathtaking, panoramic view of the charming Tsuwano townscape below. It is a perfect spot to experience the harmony between historical ruins and natural beauty.
The castle has a long and storied history, having been ruled by various clans over centuries. The Yoshimi clan ruled for 14 generations (319 years), followed by the Sakazaki clan for one generation (16 years), and finally the Kamei clan, who held the castle for 11 generations (225 years) until the Meiji Restoration. In 1686, the castle was destroyed by lightning strikes and was never rebuilt. In 1874, the structures were dismantled, leaving only the impressive stone walls. Today, these ruins are carefully preserved as significant historical landmarks.
The most striking feature is the exceptionally well-preserved stone walls. Near the summit, these walls spread out, showcasing the structural layout of the former castle fortifications. The journey itself is part of the attraction; the ride on the sightseeing lift offers a unique vantage point, and once you reach the top, the view overlooking the traditional town of Tsuwano is truly unforgettable. While no buildings remain, the shape and scale of the stone walls allow visitors to visualize the grandeur of the original fortress.
The sightseeing lift generally operates from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM (the last descent is at 4:20 PM). Please note that from December 1st to the end of February, the lift only operates on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays (however, it does operate from January 1st to January 5th). Because the scenery changes beautifully with the seasons, we recommend checking the lift schedule before your visit. Occasionally, special light-up events may occur at night.
Visitors can enjoy a unique ascent to the castle ruins via the sightseeing lift. The lift serves as the primary access to the upper parts of the site. After disembarking from the lift, there is a walking path leading to the Honmaru (inner sanctum) area. This combination of a lift ride followed by a scenic walk allows for a multi-layered approach to exploring the historical site.
The area surrounding the castle ruins is characterized by beautiful, traditional Japanese townscapes. From the lift landing point, you can easily walk to explore the nearby streets. The area is also home to other significant sites, such as Taikodani Inari Shrine, making it easy to incorporate the castle ruins into a broader historical tour of Tsuwano.
While the lift takes you part of the way, you will need to walk from the lift landing to the Honmaru area. Therefore, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Please be mindful of the lift's operating hours, as they vary by season and day of the week. Most importantly, ensure you are back at the lift before the final descent at 4:20 PM to avoid being stranded.
