Tsurigane-do is a breathtaking natural scenic spot located on the Kosode Coast in Kuji City, Iwate Prefecture. The coastline is characterized by dramatic cliffs and rocky reefs, showcasing a unique landscape shaped by the forces of nature. The name 'Tsurigane-do' (Bell Cave) originates from a legend that a bell-shaped rock once hung from the cave's ceiling. Today, it is celebrated for its massive natural hole and the stunning geological formations that surround it.
This area is a representative scenic spot of the Northern Sanriku Coast. The topography has been shaped over centuries by natural forces, including the impact of historical tsunamis, such as the one in 1917. The site holds cultural significance as a place to witness the mystery of nature; specifically, during the summer solstice, the alignment of the sun allows the morning light to shine directly through the cave opening, a phenomenon that has been cherished by locals and visitors alike.
The greatest attraction is the spectacular light show through the cave's opening. Especially around the summer solstice in June, the sunrise from the horizon pierces through the hole, creating a mystical and ethereal atmosphere. Another nearby highlight is 'Kabuto-iwa' (Helmet Rock), a uniquely shaped rock that resembles a samurai helmet. Located just across from the cave via a short tunnel, this rock is a vital part of the coastal scenery.
The summer solstice in June is the most significant time to visit. If you arrive in the early morning during this period, you may witness the incredible sight of the sun rising from the horizon through the cave's natural window. Additionally, from July to August, the coastline is adorned with the vibrant orange blooms of the 'Skashiyuri' (Lilium auratum) lilies, adding a splash of color to the rugged landscape.
Visitors can enjoy a peaceful stroll through this natural landscape. The shoreline is covered with beautiful smooth pebbles, making it a pleasant place for a walk while admiring the scenery. The experience is centered on observing the raw beauty of nature, from the light filtering through the cave to the various unique rock formations scattered along the coast.
The area surrounding Tsurigane-do is known as the beautiful Kosode Coast. A scenic driving route via National Route 45 and Prefectural Route 268 (Noda-Ouchi Line) offers stunning ocean views. Visitors can easily combine a visit to the cave with a look at the nearby Kabuto-iwa to compare the different natural sculptures created by the sea and wind.
As this is a natural coastal area, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. The roads leading to the site can be narrow and winding, so please drive with caution. Because the cave and the coastline are in their natural state, please be mindful of your surroundings and move safely around the uneven terrain.
