Tsunan Sunflower Square is a breathtaking sunflower field located on the Okinohara Plateau in Tsunan Town, Niigata Prefecture, perfectly embodying the essence of summer. The site features a vast area of approximately 4 hectares, where sunflowers are planted using a strategic method to stagger their blooming periods. This ensures that visitors can enjoy the stunning golden landscape throughout a long stretch of the summer season rather than just a single moment. The expansive view offers a sense of openness and a deep connection with nature.
This square has been developed as a destination to allow many people to enjoy the rich natural beauty and the changing seasons of the region. It is not merely about planting flowers; the cultivation is highly planned, dividing the fields into three distinct areas to stagger the blooming times. This thoughtful approach reflects the dedication of the local community, ensuring that no matter when you visit during the summer, you will encounter the quintessential 'summer landscape' of Niigata.
The greatest attraction is the sea of sunflowers that fills your entire field of vision. The sight of countless sunflowers facing the sun across the vast expanse is truly overwhelming. Additionally, from the observation deck, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the entire field, looking down upon a massive golden carpet from a high vantage point. The site is also very popular with families, featuring a 'Sunflower Maze' where children can play and explore amidst nature.
The peak season for sunflowers is primarily from July to August. For 2026, the event is scheduled to run from July 24th to August 16th, and we highly recommend visiting during this window. During the bright daylight hours, the vibrant yellow of the sunflowers basking in the sun is at its most brilliant, making it the perfect time for photography. However, as this is an outdoor area in the heat of summer, please prepare with hats and parasols to protect yourself from the strong sunlight and prevent heatstroke.
Here, you can experience the changing seasons firsthand. Taking photos against the backdrop of the vast sunflower fields will create lasting memories. The Sunflower Maze offers a special adventure for young children. During peak times, you may also find local stalls, allowing you to feel the local energy and enjoy a relaxing summer moment amidst nature.
