Tsukimi no Mori is a massive 37.5-hectare natural park located in Kaizu City, Gifu Prefecture. It was designed as a space for people to reconnect with the forest. The park boasts a diverse collection of over 11,000 plants, including traditional native vegetation alongside seasonal highlights such as hydrangeas, cherry blossoms, and azaleas. The landscape transforms beautifully with each passing season.
The region surrounding the park was historically prone to flooding due to the convergence of the three major rivers: Kiso, Nagara, and Ibi. Approximately 250 years ago, a large-scale river diversion project was ordered by the Edo Shogunate and executed by samurai from the Satsuma domain. This engineering feat successfully mitigated flood damage and changed the local landscape. To commemorate this history, the "Kagoshima Forest" was established within the park. Visitors can also find a monument featuring the "Cross in a Circle" (Kotsu Juji), the crest of the Shimazu clan of Satsuma.
The park offers various walking trails for plant observation. A key destination is the "Tsukimi Observatory" (Tsukimidai). To reach the "Tsukimi Plaza" located at the top, visitors climb the "Stairway to the Moon." The view from this vantage point changes significantly depending on the weather and time of day. Another popular path is the "Mitsuuroko Trail," which is carefully landscaped to showcase seasonal flora.
The park is characterized by its seasonal transformations. In June, the hydrangeas are in full bloom, offering a stunning display. On Saturdays, the park hosts special illuminations until 9:00 PM. This allows visitors to experience the landscape under the moonlight and artificial lighting, creating a mystical atmosphere. Please note that lighting schedules may vary based on weather conditions.
