The Tsugaru Iwaki Skyline is a scenic toll road that ascends to the 8th station of Mt. Iwaki, one of Aomori Prefecture's most iconic peaks. As you ascend, the landscape shifts dynamically, offering a front-row seat to the grand scale of nature. From this high vantage point, you can enjoy a vast panoramic view that stretches toward Matsumae-zaki in Hokkaido to the north and the Shirakami-Sanchi mountain range to the southwest, providing a profound sense of the region's geography.
Mt. Iwaki has long been a revered mountain by local communities. The skyline was developed to provide easier access to this natural environment while preserving its pristine state. At the 8th station, you will find the rest area known as 'IWAKI 1625.' The design of the facility is inspired by the majestic Golden Eagle, a bird often seen in this area, reflecting a culture that lives in harmony with the local natural environment.

The most significant feature of this route is the ability to take a lift from the 8th station to the 9th station. The lift ride takes approximately 10 minutes, allowing you to experience the rapid change in elevation and scenery. The road itself is a well-maintained mountain pass, perfect for witnessing the evolving views as you climb. For those seeking a physical challenge, the route is also popular for 'hill climbing' activities, where cyclists or motorists aim for the summit via a 30 to 40-minute ascent.
The skyline is typically open from late April to mid-November. Summer and autumn are particularly beautiful, offering clear skies and vibrant views of the surrounding mountains. Please note that opening hours and closing times may change depending on snow conditions or weather. For the best experience, visit during daylight hours to fully appreciate the distant landmarks and the vastness of the Shirakami-Sanchi area.
Beyond driving, you can enjoy a lift ride to reach higher altitudes quickly. The route is also a popular destination for cyclists and motorcyclists performing hill climbs to reach the summit. Whether you are driving for leisure or seeking an athletic challenge, the skyline offers a unique way to experience the high-altitude environment.
The area is conveniently located near major cities such as Hirosaki, Goshogawara, and Aomori City. The natural beauty of Mt. Iwaki serves as an excellent base for travelers looking to explore other natural attractions in the Tohoku region after their drive or lift ride.
Please prepare for the payment of both the toll road fee and the lift fee. Cash is commonly used for these services.
Most signage and information within the facility are primarily in Japanese.
No advance reservations are required to use the road or the lift.
Because of the high altitude, temperatures are significantly lower than at sea level. We strongly recommend bringing warm clothing and layers suitable for mountain environments.
Photography is permitted from the lift and the road, but please prioritize safety and ensure you do not obstruct traffic or other visitors.
While the road is accessible by vehicle, please be aware that the lift stations and rest areas may have steps or uneven surfaces.
