The Nakajima Lock, located in the middle of the Fuwa Canal, is a water control facility developed through Toyama City's urban planning projects. It is a structure that showcases advanced civil engineering techniques from the early Showa era and is currently protected as a National Important Cultural Property (Structure). The construction, featuring stone masonry, reinforced concrete, and rivet-joined gates, serves as a precious testament to the architectural technology of that era. It plays a vital role in regulating the canal's water levels and stands as a symbol of the region's history alongside its beautiful surroundings.
Construction of this facility began in June 1930 as part of Toyama City's urban development. It was completed in July 1934 and has functioned as a crucial piece of infrastructure for the Fuwa Canal ever since. The sophisticated construction techniques, utilizing concrete, reinforced concrete, and stone in a highly integrated manner, demonstrate the high level of civil engineering mastery during the early Showa period. In the late 1990s, maintenance work was carried out to ensure the dynamic preservation of the lock. It is one of the rare examples in Japanese urban history where a canal facility centered around a lock has been so well-preserved.
The greatest highlight is the structural beauty that tells the story of early 20th-century technology. In particular, the rivet-joined gates—a rare sight today—and the robust stone masonry visually demonstrate the high level of technical skill of the time. Furthermore, when the sightseeing boat "Fuwa Suijo Line" passes through the lock, you can observe the dramatic water-level changes up close. This process, often called a "water elevator," is a key element in understanding how the canal functions. Other nearby facilities, such as the lock operation room and water gauges, also offer a glimpse into the functional design of that era.
The area around the Fuwa Canal presents different faces depending on the season. In spring, the rows of cherry blossoms near the Nakajima Bridge are particularly beautiful, making it an ideal time for a stroll along the water. To best observe the intricate details of the structure and the movement of the water, we recommend visiting during daylight hours when the sightseeing boat passes through. Please note that sightseeing boat services may be suspended during the winter season, so please check the operational status before your visit.
By taking the "Fuwa Suijo Line," you can experience the history and nature of the canal from a unique perspective on the water. The dramatic change in water levels as the boat passes through the lock is a one-of-a-kind experience. Additionally, the approximately 1.8km waterfront promenade leading from the Nakajima Lock to Fugan Canal Kansui Park is a wonderful place for walking and photography. You can enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the waterfront while strolling along the well-maintained paths.
The area surrounding the Nakajima Lock is filled with historical landscapes. Downstream from the Nakajima Bridge, there are green spaces and cherry blossom trees that serve as a place of relaxation for locals. Toward the upper reaches of the canal, you will find the Fugan Canal Kansui Park, which offers a scenic path leading toward the Nakajima Lock. The nearby Ushijima Lock also contributes to the historical and scenic character of the Fuwa Canal system.
While the waterfront paths are well-maintained, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes for your stroll. If you plan to use the sightseeing boat, it is a good idea to check the operation schedule in advance for a smooth experience.
