Toyama City Family Park is located within Shiroyama Park in the Kureha Hills, west of Toyama City. Operating under the philosophy of 'Creating a New Satoyama Where Both People and Forests Thrive,' the park focuses on the harmony between animals, the Satoyama landscape, and the local community. Rather than being a simple exhibition facility, it is distinguished by its dedication to environmental conservation and biological breeding programs. Surrounded by abundant greenery, it provides a perfect setting to observe diverse wildlife in a naturalistic environment.
Opened in 1984, the facility has evolved into a vital center for biodiversity. While its establishment involved discussions regarding environmental protection, it has successfully become a recognized 'Rare Species Conservation Zoo,' receiving certification from the Ministry of the Environment. The park is a pioneer in the artificial breeding of the Japanese Ptarmigan; notably, in 2019, it achieved a domestic first by successfully managing natural hatching through artificial breeding efforts. This role is crucial in preserving Japan's natural heritage for future generations.
Inside the park, a wide variety of animals live in specialized areas designed to mimic their natural habitats. Visitors can observe large mammals such as giraffes, zebras, and tigers, as well as red pandas, otters, penguins, and various birds, insects, and reptiles. The 'Natural Zones' are a key feature, offering intimate encounters with wildlife. This includes camera-equipped nesting boxes for observing flying squirrels, nature trails that change with the seasons, and a biotope where seasonal nocturnal observation events are held, allowing visitors to witness the authentic behaviors of animals.
The park offers different charms depending on the season. From spring to autumn, the nature trails and lawn areas are ideal for outdoor activities, and the lush greenery provides excellent opportunities for observing seasonal plants and insects. Around June, the park may host firefly observation events at the 'Hotaru no Oyado.' Please note that during winter, operating hours tend to be shorter, so checking the schedule in advance is recommended. Animals are most active during bright daylight hours, while the late afternoon offers a peaceful, serene atmosphere.
A variety of activities are available to help visitors connect with nature. These include the 'Horse Riding Area' for equestrian experiences, educational learning at the Nature Experience Center, and relaxing walks along the nature trails. The park's exhibits and breeding-focused approach provide a unique opportunity to understand the mechanics of the natural world. As the park features natural terrain and many walking paths, we recommend wearing comfortable clothing and sturdy walking shoes. Since most activities are outdoors, please bring items suited for the season, such as hats, water, and warm clothing for cold weather. To protect the animals and the environment, please follow the rules: do not feed the animals, avoid photography in restricted areas, and ensure you take all trash home with you. Regarding payment, while cash is always accepted, some small facilities within the park may only accept cash, so it is wise to carry some Japanese Yen for a smooth experience.
