Lake Toya Onsen is a renowned hot spring resort located on the southern shores of the beautiful caldera lake, Lake Toya, spanning across Toyako Town in Abuta District and Sobetsu Town in Yubari District, Hokkaido. This area is a certified Global Geopark, characterized by its dynamic natural landscapes shaped by volcanic activity. The lakeshore is lined with numerous hotels, traditional Japanese inns (ryokan), and restaurants, allowing visitors to enjoy the soothing benefits of hot springs while gazing at the calm lake surface and majestic mountains. With seasonal events and spectacular fireworks displays, every visit offers a new discovery.
The history of Lake Toya Onsen began in 1917 when three explorers discovered a 43°C hot spring source. This spring is believed to have been formed in connection with the volcanic activity of Mount Usu in 1910. Originally called "Tokotan Onsen," it was later renamed to its current name. In 1949, the area was designated as the Shikotsu-Toya National Park, fostering development alongside nature conservation. The area gained international recognition following the 34th G8 Summit held in 2008. As part of the Lake Toya-Mt. Usu UNESCO Global Geopark, it remains a historic location where one can truly feel the pulse of the Earth.
Lake Toya Onsen offers a diverse range of attractions where nature and culture converge. The well-maintained promenade along the lakeshore provides an intimate way to experience the lake's beauty. Visitors can also enjoy the "Toyako Sculpture Park," featuring outdoor art installations set within nature. Near the mountainside, the craters formed by the eruptions of Mt. Usu in 2000 offer a chance to witness the raw energy of the earth up close. Taking a sightseeing boat to the islands in the lake provides an exceptional panoramic view. Additionally, the hot spring town features free footbaths (ashiyu) and handbaths (teyabu), allowing for a quick and easy way to enjoy the warmth of the springs during a stroll.
Lake Toya offers different charms throughout the seasons. From spring to summer, the refreshing breeze and lush greenery are delightful. The "Lake Toya Long-Run Fireworks Display" is held from late April to October, making it the highlight of the season as fireworks reflect beautifully off the lake surface. In autumn, the landscape is painted with vibrant fall colors, while in winter (early November to early March), the
