Todou Falls is a spectacular waterfall located in the heart of the Todou Valley in Kitaakita City, Akita Prefecture. This area sits at the headwaters of the Noro River, upstream from Lake Taihei and the Komatakyō Gorge, characterized by a stunning U-shaped valley. The area around Todou Falls preserves much of its original natural form, making it a precious zone for regional environmental conservation. The landscape is defined by its ancient beech forests and abundant water resources, embodying the quintessential beauty of Japan's wilderness.
The area around Todou Falls is dotted with diverse geological wonders. Near the falls, you can observe rock formations featuring numerous 'potholes' (pot holes) carved by the powerful force of the flowing water. Further upstream, you can discover different types of falls, such as Nakano-taki and Otoko-taki, which provide a variety of scenic views during your valley walk. Because it is located at the source of the Noro River, the water is exceptionally transparent, allowing you to witness the brilliant sparkle of the stream up close.
The beauty of Todou Falls changes dramatically with the seasons. The best time to visit is from May to November. From early to mid-October, the valley transforms into a vibrant tapestry of color as the surrounding trees turn brilliant shades of red and gold during the autumn foliage season. In the summer, you can also enjoy the sight of various subalpine plants blooming, making every visit a unique experience of nature's cycles.
The primary activity in this area is trekking through the wilderness. A popular route takes about 1 hour and 10 minutes one way from the Moriyoshi-san Wildlife Center to Todou Falls. As you walk through the ancient beech forest, you can practice forest bathing (shinrin-yoku) while listening to the soothing sounds of the river and watching for local wildlife like the Black Woodpecker. Please note that the upper sections of the falls do not have maintained paths, so specialized gear and caution are required for advanced exploration.
There are several routes for those seeking deeper immersion in nature. For example, the Usotaki Course in the Akamizu Valley takes about 2.5 hours one way, while the long-distance traverse toward Tamagawa Onsen takes approximately 4 hours. As these routes can be challenging, it is highly recommended to use a local guide for a safe and professional trekking experience. The area also features various hot spring (onsen) locations, allowing you to combine a nature hike with a relaxing soak.
Preparation is key due to the rugged terrain. When trekking, wear sturdy walking shoes and appropriate outdoor clothing. If you plan to explore the upper sections of the falls, spiked footwear or heavy-duty hiking boots are highly recommended. Please be aware that the entire Noro River area is a designated fishing prohibition zone; please respect local regulations. Always check the latest weather reports before visiting, as heavy rain can cause rapid water rises, rockfalls, or slippery conditions. Safety should always be your top priority.
