Toga Shrine (Toga Jinja), located in Toyokawa City, Aichi Prefecture, is a highly prestigious shrine that has been deeply revered by the local community for centuries as the 'Mikawa Kuni Ichinomiya' (the first shrine of Mikawa Province). It enshrines the deity Ookimi Tamano Mikoto. The shrine is unique for its 'Nisho Ittai' (two places as one) structure, where the deity is worshipped both at the 'Okumiya' (inner shrine) atop Mt. Hongo and the 'Satomiya' (village shrine) below. The grounds are surrounded by lush greenery, including massive Zelkova and Camphor trees, creating a tranquil and sacred atmosphere. It is a place where you can experience the essence of Japanese spirituality in perfect harmony with nature.
The shrine has a long history of worshiping Ookimi Tamano Mikoto. The spiritual connection between the mountain sanctuary and the village shrine has made it a vital guardian of the region for generations. The traditional architectural styles and the way the shrine integrates with the natural landscape make it a precious cultural heritage site for understanding Japanese religious traditions. The weathered beauty of the buildings and the ancient trees tell a story of deep-rooted history and enduring faith.

The greatest charm of Toga Shrine lies in its unique dual-shrine structure. By visiting both the Okumiya at the summit and the Satomiya at the foot of the mountain, visitors can feel the expansive spiritual energy of the sacred space. The grounds are filled with towering Zelkova and Camphor trees, offering a landscape full of life. The heavy, historic architecture, beautifully manicured gardens, and the changing colors of the seasons provide a sense of profound peace. Additionally, you can enjoy seasonal charms such as limited-edition Goshuin (sacred stamps) that reflect the time of year.
Toga Shrine offers different charms throughout the year. In spring, beautiful cherry blossoms bloom; in early summer, the greenery is fresh and vibrant; and in autumn, brilliant foliage colors the landscape. The autumn season is particularly stunning, with red maple leaves reflecting on water surfaces, making it a perfect spot for photography. Visiting in the early morning is highly recommended to experience the most sacred atmosphere in the crisp, clear air. During the day, sunlight filtering through the dense canopy creates a beautiful, ethereal light.

Beyond prayer, we recommend a relaxing stroll through the 'Satomiya' area. Walking the nature-rich paths provides a refreshing escape from daily life. You can also collect seasonal Goshuin (sacred stamps) as a beautiful way to remember your journey. Visiting during traditional festivals or seasonal events, such as the wind chime offerings, will allow you to experience Japanese culture more deeply.
The area around Toga Shrine preserves much of its natural beauty and historical landscape. After your visit, enjoy walking through the nearby natural paths. The Toyokawa area also features historical streetscapes and local cultural spots, making it a great place to explore both the shrine and the surrounding community.
