Toruzuka Kofun is a representative decorated burial mound located in Hitachinaka City, Ibaraki Prefecture. Designated as a national historic site, this keyhole-shaped mound (zenpokoenfun) dates back to the early 7th century. The most striking feature is the colorful murals painted on the interior stone chamber walls. Using red pigment (bengala) on white clay walls, the artwork depicts intricate geometric patterns, swords, shields, and horse gear. The surrounding area is maintained as a historic park, allowing visitors to observe the exterior of the mound and the scenic landscape at any time.
This tomb is believed to have been constructed during the late Kofun period in the early 7th century. It gained fame in 1973 following excavations that identified it as one of Japan's most significant decorated tombs. Because the stone chamber remained unexposed for a long time, the preservation of the wall paintings is exceptional. Excavated items found alongside an adult male's remains include small swords, daggers, and iron arrowheads, providing vital evidence of ancient burial customs and lifestyles. Some of these artifacts are also designated as tangible cultural properties of Hitachinaka City.
The primary attraction is the mural art within the stone chamber. While access to the actual murals is strictly limited, a full-scale replica is currently on display at the facility, allowing visitors to observe the delicate patterns and iconography up close. You can also observe the distinct keyhole shape of the mound itself. The surrounding moat provides a clear understanding of the original structure. The exhibition facility also showcases authentic excavated weapons and tools, offering a deep dive into the era.
Access to the actual stone chamber and original murals is limited to twice a year, during the spring and autumn seasons. For the spring opening, hours are 9:00–16:30, and for autumn, they are 9:00–16:00. It is highly recommended to plan your visit around these periods. The surrounding historic park is open for strolls year-round, offering a peaceful way to view the ruins amidst nature. Daytime visits are ideal for observing the mound's shape and the surrounding scenery clearly.
Adjacent to the Hitachinaka City Archaeological Research Center, visitors can explore various archaeological exhibits. Through the life-sized replica of the stone chamber murals, you can experience the vibrant world of ancient colors. The center also hosts archaeological lectures approximately four times a year. Checking event information in advance is a great way to deepen your knowledge. A walk around the mound allows you to physically experience the ancient topography and landscape.
The area is developed as the "Toruzuka Kofun Historic Park," a quiet environment surrounded by nature. Nearby, you can also find the Juro-ana lateral cave group (a national historic site), one of the largest in Eastern Japan, allowing for a rich historical-cultural journey. The area blends residential tranquility with natural beauty, making it a perfect spot for a calm historical exploration.
