Hoshino Onsen Tombo no Yu is a day-trip hot spring facility located in the Hoshino area of Karuizawa, Nagano Prefecture. It is characterized by its use of free-flowing natural hot spring water (genzen kakenagashi). Visitors can enjoy the hot springs alongside the stunning scenery of the surrounding lush forests. The indoor baths are designed with large windows to allow guests to feel a deep connection with the surrounding nature. A major highlight is the ability to experience different landscapes and seasonal-themed baths throughout the year.
Since its opening in 1915, Hoshino Onsen has been recognized as a famous hot spring destination in Karuizawa, a renowned summer resort. Having a history of being visited by many notable cultural figures, the facility continues this legacy by offering a space where visitors can rejuvenate. It serves as a place to restore one's energy while maintaining a deep respect for the surrounding natural environment.
The facility features open-air baths that offer a sense of openness and indoor baths designed to create a sense of unity with nature. The cold water bath (mizufuro) uses spring water from the nearby Wild Bird Forest, ensuring a stable and refreshing temperature throughout the year. Additionally, near the entrance, you can find 'Shinra Hyessen,' a seasonal display of calligraphy and paintings that changes with the seasons, allowing you to experience a different charm every time you visit.
You can enjoy different scenery and seasonal-themed baths depending on the time of year. In spring, enjoy the cherry blossoms and fresh buds; in summer, the deep greenery; in autumn, the vibrant foliage; and in winter, the serene snowy landscapes. Specifically, in autumn, you can soak in the hot spring while viewing the beautiful gradients of autumn colors. The facility also holds seasonal events, such as 'Apple Bath' in autumn or 'Yuzu Bath' during the winter solstice. The way light enters the facility also changes with the time of day, offering different expressions of nature.
In addition to the hot spring soak, you can enjoy a sauna experience. The facility features a 'Bona Sauna' with a temperature of approximately 85–90°C, where water is poured onto the heat source every 20 minutes. The combination of the hot spring and the cold water bath (using spring water from the Wild Bird Forest) provides a perfect wellness cycle. There is also a space for outdoor air bathing (gaikiyoku) to refresh yourself in the crisp, clean air.
The facility is located within the Hoshino area, surrounded by various spots where you can fully enjoy the nature of Karuizawa. It is an ideal place to stop by during your sightseeing tours around the area.
Please follow these rules for a pleasant experience. First, always wash your body thoroughly before entering the bath. Long hair should be tied up, and towels should not touch the bath water. The use of smartphones or electronic devices in the changing rooms and bathing areas is strictly prohibited. For guests with tattoos, entry is permitted only if they can be covered with a designated cover sticker (10x8cm), which can be purchased at the reception. Baby baths are provided for infants. Please note that the use of hair dye or colorants (including hair manicures) is strictly prohibited in the changing rooms, baths, and restrooms.
