Unkai Terrace, located within Hoshino Resorts Tomamu, is an observation facility where you can witness a dynamic sea of clouds up close when specific meteorological conditions are met. Situated near the summit of Mount Tomamu, the view of the clouds spreading below offers a truly special experience, as if you are living above the clouds. Here, you can observe the ever-changing expressions of various types of clouds as they shift from moment to moment.
The concept of Unkai Terrace was born from the desire of staff members who, while maintaining the gondola during the summer, wanted to share the beautiful sea of clouds they witnessed with all visitors. Rather than just a simple observation deck, it has become a beloved destination that offers the 'experience' of interacting with a natural phenomenon. The facility emphasizes a deep respect for nature, even implementing its own unique 'Unkai Forecast' to help visitors plan their visits.
The Unkai Terrace is primarily operational during the season from mid-June to mid-October. The ideal conditions for the sea of clouds to appear are when the wind is weak from the previous night through the early morning, accompanied by a sharp drop in temperature. In particular, the 'Pacific Sea of Clouds,' caused by warm air flowing in from the Pacific Ocean, is a rare and unique phenomenon found only in Tomamu. Additionally, even during poor weather, you may witness 'bad weather clouds' characterized by thick mist, offering a completely different atmosphere depending on the conditions.
You cannot access Unkai Terrace by foot or car; you must use the 'Unkai Gondola' from the base. Because weather and temperatures change drastically, please pay close attention to your clothing. Even in summer, temperatures at the summit can drop to single digits in the early morning. It is essential to prepare heavy winter gear such as down jackets, thick coats, knit hats, gloves, and neck warmers. Regarding photography, personal photography is free, but any photography or recording for commercial purposes requires prior permission.
The probability of the sea of clouds appearing is approximately 40% during the season. Therefore, we highly recommend checking the 'Unkai Forecast' published on the official website before your visit. Please be aware that depending on weather conditions, the gondola service may be suspended or visibility may become extremely poor. Since this experience is centered around a natural phenomenon, please understand that the daily situation is subject to change.
