Tokaikan is a historic facility in Ito City, Shizuoka Prefecture, which was renovated and preserved by the city as a cultural asset. Originally founded in 1928 (the early Showa era), the building itself serves as a living museum, showcasing the exquisite design and craftsmanship of a traditional Japanese inn. Today, visitors can explore the interior of the former guest rooms and grand halls, or enjoy the hot spring baths, allowing you to experience both modern Japanese architecture and the timeless culture of hot springs simultaneously.
The facility preserves the architectural style of the early 20th century. Once a bustling ryokan that welcomed many guests, its original function as a lodging house ended in 1997. However, through the efforts of Ito City, the building was preserved and renovated as a cultural asset to serve as a hub for local history. The structure maintains the layout of a high-class ryokan from the pre-war era, including the grand halls that once served as social centers for the elite.
The interior is filled with spaces that retain the atmosphere of a bygone era. A standout feature is the grand hall on the third floor, which once hosted elegant banquets featuring geisha performances. The presence of a stage in this room allows visitors to imagine the vibrant social scenes of the past. The intricate interior design of the guest rooms and the overall architectural style are also major draws. At night, the building is beautifully illuminated, offering a different, more atmospheric perspective of its majestic silhouette.
During the daytime, you can clearly observe the fine details and the texture of the wooden architecture under natural light. In contrast, the illuminated view at night is incredibly evocative and makes for a wonderful evening stroll. If you wish to use the hot spring baths, the primary hours are during the day (11:00–20:00), but visiting in the late afternoon to unwind after a day of sightseeing is also highly recommended. The atmosphere changes beautifully with the seasons.
At Tokaikan, the experience goes beyond mere sightseeing. The most unique way to enjoy the facility is through the 'day-use hot spring' (tachiyori-yu) service. You can relax in the hot springs while surrounded by a historic atmosphere. Walking through the building provides a visual and tactile connection to the lifestyle and social culture of pre-war Japan.
The Ito Onsen area is home to many other accommodations and hot spring facilities. Tokaikan is conveniently located within walking distance from Ito Station, making it a great spot to visit between meals or while exploring local shops and restaurants. Nearby, the Okawa Bridge offers scenic views and seasonal illuminations, making the entire area perfect for a leisurely stroll.

Because you may need to remove your shoes or navigate uneven steps, we recommend wearing easy-to-remove shoes and comfortable clothing.
