Tokachidake Obosetai is a scenic observation facility located at an altitude of 930 meters within the majestic Daisetsuzan National Park. Situated directly below the main peak of Mt. Tokachi, the landscape is characterized by a dynamic coexistence of desolate, volcanic rock formations and lush, surrounding nature. It offers a breathtaking 360-degree panoramic view that stretches from Asahikawa City to Furano City. The scenery transforms beautifully with each season: in summer, it serves as a vital base for hikers; in autumn, the vast foothills are painted with vibrant colors; and in winter, visitors can witness the dramatic shifts in the snowy landscape.
The area is part of the highly preserved natural environment of Daisetsuzan National Park. The path leading from Shirogane Onsen to Obosetai features a bridge named after the famous novelist Ayako Miura, who was born in Asahikawa. The region also holds historical value for its volcanic topography and the culture of living in harmony with nature. In 2016, the Tokachidake Obosetai Shelter was completed to ensure that visitors can spend their time more comfortably despite the high-altitude environment.
The views from Obosetai encompass all the major surrounding peaks. You can easily spot the majestic Mt. Asahi, the highest peak in Daisetsuzan, along with Mt. Biei, Biei Fuji, and Mt. Kamifurano. Below the mountains, the vast basin stretching from Asahikawa to Furano provides a sense of immense scale. The sight of volcanic rocks and gravel scattered across the landscape visually conveys the raw, powerful energy of nature.
The greatest appeal of this location is the changing scenery throughout the year. During the summer, it acts as a base camp for mountaineering, surrounded by lush greenery. In autumn (late September to early October), the creeping pine and white birch trees turn brilliant colors, decorating the foothills of the Tokachi mountain range. A particularly rare and beautiful sight occurs when the first snow falls, creating a contrast between the autumn colors and the white snow. Depending on the time of day, you can also witness different expressions of nature, such as morning mists or golden sunsets.
Primary activities include enjoying the panoramic views and hiking or mountaineering in the surrounding areas. In the summer months, it is widely used as a starting point for serious climbers. It is also a popular destination for scenic drives, allowing travelers to experience the vast, quintessential nature of Hokkaido directly from their car or the parking area.
The surrounding area features several hot spring resorts, such as Shirogane Onsen, making it a popular route to combine nature walks with relaxing hot spring experiences. It also offers excellent access to the Biei and Furano areas, allowing you to easily integrate this visit into a tour of the famous 'hill towns' of Biei.
